Thumb trapped in car door

Hi my daughter shut the car door on her thumb yesterday seemed OK yesterday but we have woken up to it quite swollen and bruised today. Would you get this checked or see how it goes ? She says it hurts to touch and does seem to struggle bending it!

Absolutely, my sister broke her fingers when our dad accidentally trapped them in his car door.

Best pop to A&E or a minor injuries clinic asap.

Get it checked, I accidentally shut my sister's thumb in a car door when we were small and it was broken.

It is swollen as its supposed to be because the body hates being mucked about with so will be difficult to bend for a few days.

Broken bones bleed like Billie oh so you should be expecting to see massive bruising which I can’t see in your photo.

I am not medical but have had my fingers shut in the car door and remember shutting my brothers’ fingers in the car door. Our fingers looked much as your photo shows. No broken bones so far.

Slightly bruised! Not overly swelled its so hard knowing what to do for minor things isn't it! She was only up a&e at Easter with a suspected broken ankle afyer hurting on her scooter 🤣 honestly mother like daughter! I've had concussion stitches in my knee and fell at the mums race on sports day this year 🙃 😭

I'd be inclined to leave it - majority of finger breaks heal themselves anyway.

It’s bound to be swollen as long as it doesn’t look displaced excessively bruised and extremely painful I’d be tempted to leave it
a swollen finger won’t particularly bend anyway

I still have a scar across the inside of my thumb joint from slamming it in a car door which had a child lock on it... took my Mother bloody ages to realise why I was yelling, get out, come round and open the door! When she did it was fairly mangled and pouring blood... I still just got a paper towel and a 'there there you won't die'...

That looks pretty good considering how much damage a car door can do - pretty minor bruising, no broken skin, minor swelling... I would give appropriate pain meds, encourage child to keep the digit raised above heart level as much as possible and give it time to heal.

Trustyourinnervision · 25/06/2025 18:05

I did the same a few years ago, my thumb went virtually flat! Although the nail seemed ok at the time I did end up losing it, a new one grew however and now you’d never know. If she still can’t bend it when the swelling subsides perhaps get it checked but my first port of call would actually be your local pharmacist for advice, you can buy little splint type dressings too.

WonderingWanda · 25/06/2025 18:10

It doesn't look that bruised to be honest. A break would be very painful and likely have some black bruising around it already. Her thumbnail might go black and fall out in a few days bit it will grow back.

We did a pharmacy trip. She thinks just badly bruised and to monitor for a few days if still swollen then go get it checked.
Thanks for all your replies 😁
