To take a second day off sick when WFH

Would you attempt to login to work if wfh on day 2 of a sickness bug? Where you are still being sick every hour and living on the bathroom floor?

No. If you are sick, get yourself well.

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 24/06/2025 22:51

Absolutely not. Don't return until youre 100%

They'd replace you in a second if you died xx

GrumbleBush · 24/06/2025 22:54

I feel guilty because when you wfh it seems like you have to keep going because you can work with your laptop from bed etc. And my sickness record isn’t the best at the moment I had a few weeks off after dealing with a traumatic event at the end of last year. But honestly I still feel beyond awful.

Today was d2 for me. Luckily the v has stopped but I’m still sweating buckets & d is slowing but not stopped. I’m going to have to be off tomorrow as well. I’m in no fit state to work; I have popped onto MN a few times but I’m dozing a lot too.

Best to wait it out tbh

CleverMintHedgehog · 24/06/2025 23:16

If I’m fit enough to work, I work. This could be from bed or with a longer break. If I’m feeling too crap, then I don’t. So, from what you describe, no, I wouldn’t.

TeenLifeMum · 24/06/2025 23:21

I did once when my boss was guilt tripping me and I knew I was about to go under consultation. Now I’d take the sick days I needed to actually recover. No point being a martyr, we’re all just numbers on a spreadsheet and can be cut at any time. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t take the piss and sometimes I go above and beyond, but only when I choose to. I wouldn’t take more sick days than I need but I would take them.

Talkingfrog · 25/06/2025 00:39

I wouldn't attempt to work if I was as you described.

Firstly, you need to rest. Your body needs time to recover. Start working again too soon you will feel ill for longer.

Secondly, you won't be able to concentrate properly so either won't be very productive or will make mistakes.

bythefireplace · 25/06/2025 00:46

No, you’re sick!

I tried to do it and worked through 3 days with horrific diarrhoea and a temperature. Ended up being sent to hospital by the GP as they were querying sepsis and off work for 2 weeks with campylobacter

coxesorangepippin · 25/06/2025 02:10

No, you're sick!!

rookiemere · 25/06/2025 07:55

You already had yesterday off, most attendance systems count the number of absences not the duration, so you may as well take the time you need to get better.

Zanatdy · 25/06/2025 07:57

Definitely not, I wouldn’t be able to do my job if vomiting every hour. Get well soon.

GrumbleBush · 25/06/2025 07:57

I’m supposed to start at 9. I was waiting to see if I felt better. Haven’t slept. Shaking. Feel hot and sick. Don’t think it’s going to happen

No point trying to work if you are feeling even worse this morning.

Take care of yourself. Make sure you don't become dehydrated. Hope you feel better soon.

Jellycatspyjamas · 25/06/2025 08:25

Nope, you’ll only delay your recovery if you try to push through.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 25/06/2025 08:27

If you're sick, you're sick. Regardless of whether you're wfh.

Shcab · 25/06/2025 08:27

Absolutely not! Go to bed!

FrenchandSaunders · 25/06/2025 08:36

No I wouldn't work. I also WFH and I need to be really unwell to take a day off, but this sounds like it counts OP!

GonnaeNoDaeThatJustGonnaeNo · 25/06/2025 08:37

If you are unwell then stay in bed.

YourJoyousDenimExpert · 25/06/2025 08:39

WFH is a bit of a false friend when you’re not well. There is a temptation to push through whereas really if you’re not well enough to go into the office, you’re not well enough to work that day. Like many, I have a hybrid role and have certainly worked when not 100%. However there is a difference between being able to sit at your desk with lemsips and a box of tissues and needing to run the the bathroom every half an hour. Please take the second day off and get better sooner 🙂

ShesTheAlbatross · 25/06/2025 08:42

I do have a higher threshold for calling in sick when I wfh, because I might be feeling a bit too rough to commute and sit in an office, but can get stuff done at home with a lie down at lunch (I get full pay when off sick so they’d probably rather I did little bits then pay me for the day and nothing gets done).

But if I was vomiting, I’d be calling in sick.

whatsit84 · 25/06/2025 08:55

Agree with most on here, if I had a bad cold and just needed to take it more steady/have a nap at lunch I’d probably try to get something done even if less than usual, but vomiting nope. It drains you completely and you’ll be more likely to make mistakes. Get better soon!

TorturedParentsDepartment · 25/06/2025 08:59

I did recently - but I was at the point of just feeling mildly grotty rather than actively puking and I was quite open with bosses - "I'm WFH to get a few bits done but still feeling not up to usual - tell me if that's a problem and I'll take the day as sick"

LadyDanburysHat · 25/06/2025 09:15

I wouldn't in that state. When I first worked from home, I would power through feeling absolutely crap, and I think it took me longer to get well each time because of it. Now when I am ill, I think would I go to the office like this, if the answer is no, then I call in sick.

The only time I have worked when the office wouldn't have been an option, was after an operation, where I wasn't able to drive, but could make myself comfortable enough at home to work.

Honeypizza · 25/06/2025 09:38

If I'm really unwell I usually try to login in the morning to check if anything urgent needs delegating, but make it clear that I need to log back off to rest. I also try to check on things again in the afternoon. We get full sick pay though so I would feel differently if it was unpaid.
