What would you do with tax refund?

Posting here due to traffic.

I’ve had a notification from the HMRC app informing me that I’m going to have a £597 tax rebate from last tax year. I’ve requested it, and I’ll receive it within five working days.

I think I’m going to deposit half into my Stocks and Shares ISA and save the other half towards some (non-urgent) home repairs.

What would you do with this money?

If I had any debts I would repay them. If not - put it in ISA

Weekend away.

Or a few day trips.

But it really depends on your finances.

Do you have savings? No, then save it
Do you need work doing on the house? Spend it on that
No pressing needs, blow it on something fun for either just you, or for the whole family

I’ve got my Emergency Fund in a Cash ISA. Plus separate savings for home improvements. The only debt I have is my mortgage.

I’m tempted to book a weekend trip instead, but I think this money is better off in my S&S ISA and home improvements fund!

I'd see it as an unexpected windfall and without a pressing need elsewhere, have fun with it

I got a tax refund of £3k last year, used it to top up my PB's.

Nice. Are you saving for anything in particular?

Nothing, it would just go into the current account along with normal income.

Dontcallmescarface · 24/06/2025 14:31

Keep it to 1 side. I had a tax rebate that HMRC later said was too much so I had to repay most of it back via a reduction in my tax allowance. Take take it as gospel that they have calculated the rebate correctly.

I spent my £355! Bought a camp bed plus SIM for my disabled DD28, to make our annual festival attendance more accessible for her, some clothes, a day out fir the grandkids and I have some left for a few more treats. Loved it!

Just old age!😆

We both like to keep the FH of PB's and dip in whenever there is a large(ish) purchase to be made.
Last year we made just such a purchase and the tax rebate went some way to top up again.

PB's are our accessable money and with regular wins (although not as many as in the past), a bit of fun into the bargain.

That’s what I struggle with. I feel so guilty when I spend money on wants…

I cleared my credit card.

Imperfectpolly · 24/06/2025 21:07

A refund of that amount for me would go to flights for a European holiday. (For our family of four). I had a refund of this amount 2 years ago and that's what I did with it.
