Neighbour and wall

We’re doing some repairs on our garage wall which is attached to our neighbours wall.
we let our neighbours know in advance that we’d be doing repairs etc and that it might be noisy, but they’ve just sent a text basically saying we are not to attach anything to or drill into “their” wall.
can they do that? I’m not sure who “owns” the wall but I thought if it was in the middle of two houses either party could do what they wanted to their side?
can they dictate what we do on our side?

IANAL but wouldn't that be a bit like my neighbour telling me I couldn't hang pictures on the shared wall in my semi detached house?

Don't assume that a wall in the middle of two houses is jointly owned. A neighbour did this, so I had to point out that it was mine as I had erected it.

If it's a joint wall don't you need a party wall agreement before you do any work.
Also it's always best to check the deeds to find out who owns the wall before you do anything to it
