I read this story this morning and I’m sure like many other women it resonated with me massively. What can we do to change things though?

I think we have a climate of general yobbish/thuggish behaviour because society puts up with it. DS and his Dad were heckled while playing at the park yesterday evening. One of the hecklers was wearing a balaclava, electric bikes etc. Local people, backed by the police and criminal justice system, need to be able to give these people a slap.

Seems like an odd place to run, though. I know that town; it gets very busy. Loads of parks, rivers and countryside around there to run.

That’s immaterial though, women should be able to run where they like

A. Women should be able to run anywhere without anyone finding it odd or harassing them.

b. Maybe it’s an easy central point for everyone to get to?

c. Do you want to run, as a woman, in a remote area any more than a town. Different problems but problems nonetheless

d. Town centres are better lit - it’s not light all year round.

e. My local park is full of dogs off lead who are “just playing” when they trip you up

f. Why the fuck should women moderate their behaviour just because of men’s horrible behaviour?

g. What I said in a FFS!

I agree op. It’s so off putting for so many women. And well, men just fucking stop it.

Full of out of control dogs alas who ‘just want to play’ with owners who think it’s your fault that their dog has jumped all over you because you were running so winding them up. Sigh!

That 'something' would be male behaviour.

Before all the NAMALTers jump in, if other men who don't behave like that fail to call out those that do, they are part of the problem. Peer pressure is a powerful thing.

Youlikepotatoesyes · 18/06/2025 13:51

It’s because there’s absolutely zero consequences for that kind of behaviour. I mean literally zero. It’s barely even not socially acceptable.

I completely agree

Agreed. In the past year or so I have seem balaclaved kids riding round on bikes in our town, clearly about to do something dangerous and/or stupid. Haven't seen that here before. Also people are generally rider/angrier/more violent. It seems I get cut up by another car every day (when they have give way lines!).
Someone pushed past me in the supermarket yesterday, full on shoulder contact and I had just got to that spot so I hadn't been dawdling in their way before.
It's a sad time.

No, you know what you are right. I just read the article again and it sounds like they have experienced some horrible and upsetting comments.

Theres a growing pile of human trash in this country.

Social cohesion is gone and nobody gives a flying fuck anymore.

A lot of people just need to get punched in the face a lot more.

GlamOrc · 18/06/2025 15:28

There are no legal or social consequences for acting like a selfish gobshite anymore.

The 'village' can't help to raise fully functional adults anymore. It was always a vital resource for children whose parents were too thick or nasty to raise a good human being, but it's fading away even in the more rural communities now.

Social cohesion is gone and isn't coming back. The UK is no longer a high trust society, it's more like Mos Eisley Spaceport than a country.

Buckle in. This is only the beginning.

Youlikepotatoesyes · 18/06/2025 18:17

I went to a lovely new urban park on Saturday. It’s great, fantastic playground, beautiful flowers, well kept and maintained. But you can already see where it’s going; there were a couple of drunk (or worse) people zonked out on one patch of grass. At the moment, the number of decent people using it diluted it but I’ll give it six months before the drink, the drugs, the anti-social behaviour ruin it.

At one time there’d have been a park keeper or a local police officer to shift them; not anymore.

That would do alot for social cohesion

Goodness me, a slap, a punch in the face! Hmmm.

Parks, rivers and countryside are not accessible to everyone who lives in Fareham though. Hence why so many people run in city centres - it's where they work and live. They may not have cars or the ability to run further.
