Neighbours horrible grandmother

We had our son's birthday party yesterday. He's recently struck up a relationship with our next door neighbour's kids - literally within the past couple of weeks. So, belatedly, I invited them to his party

His parents were really nice and said yes. They are vegan, and one of the kids is gluten free, and the mum said that they would come with a packed lunch although grandma would bring them because they were away for the weekend.

Grandma turned up to the party, cut me off whilst I asked her if she wanted a tea or coff... And said that she needed to be shopping but had to stay there to make sure the kids had the food they could eat. (Incidentally I, by chance, realised that I had a lot of gf veg friendly stuff).

AIBU to think that this is out of order. And should I say something to the parents?

Did she bring the packed lunches?

TheSnappySquid · 15/06/2025 22:20

Nope

No let it go. Sounds like Grandma was roped into this by the parents and would obviously prefer to be somewhere else ……

What would you gain by mentioning it to parents??

Same. Just leave it.

Nanna/Nana
Nanny
Grandma
Granny/Grannie
Mamgu
or (this is new to me and sounds bizarre)
Glamma mummum

Ahh.

Had to check as you might have been using "Grandma" for all us apple-cheeked ancients.

Well, she's quite traditional and is really put out by all this vegan nonsense. She probably doesn't believe GF is a "thing" either.
She's not cross with you, she's cross with the parents and she will make them suffer when they get home by telling them, over and over, that she had to miss going shopping (somewhere like John Lewis) because of their children's dietary fads.
She kicked the packed lunches under the sofa in their kitchen, btw.
If they haven't got a sofa in their kitchen, they should have.

(Mind you, I'm a Grandma and I'm nothing like that. I know what we're supposed to be like on MN though)

Such a shame for them. You are probably right though - they are probably already aware so little point me saying anything.
