To ask who suits a bob?

I have long, blonde hair which has always been long my whole life. I keep seeing people with these swingy bobs and wonder if I should go for it. I have pointy features and my hair lays flat. It isn't thin or thick just normal... who suits a bob? Also if you have a bob do you have to style it everyday or is it easier to maintain?

I think if you have very angular features then a short bob looks good. If you have rounder, softer features then a longer bob looks better, maybe with a side fringe. I think most people can get away with one.

You definitely have to style it (to an extent) every day. I've had one on-and-off since I was 2 years old.
Even if it keeps its overall shape overnight you'll likely get a gap at your crown that needs smoothing over, or a few flicky out bits.
If you have wavy hair you can take a day off from styling by scrunching it a bit and letting it air dry. That's handy when I'm in a hurry.

I think different bobs suit different people but it is generally a great hair cut. I have had a longish collar length bob for ever and it is great for my round face.

YYYDlilah · 13/06/2025 18:40

You need to get it trimmed regularly - at least every 6 weeks . My hair grows very slowly, and is wavy so it was high maintenance. Never again.

I’ve had many variations of a bob OP, If your hair is naturally wavy, then a longer layered bob might be an easy start, just let it dry naturally, add leave in curl conditioner, Aussie good, and there you go. You can also wear it up if you want.

If it’s straight, go for a graduated bob that is chin length at the front. Use straighteners after it’s dry, and it should be nice and swingy.

I love my current bob, the closest to mine is, is Beth Cordingly’s. Same type of hair, colour and face shape too. I wash it every third day, rough dry, then straighten. Trimmed every 8 weeks. Very easy.

I have thick hair at the nape of neck but thinner towards the top so I had an undercut which helped with the bob but really I found a bob for my course, frizzy, kinda wavy kinda curly hair a nightmare because it needed styling everyday. Longer hair is more low maintenance.in comparison! I'm growing it out now and it's taking ages as I went really short (below ears as opposite to below chin length). If you want to try a bob, play it safe and go for a longer bob (lob) is my advice! As for face shape, I think they look good if you have an attractive face ! Because longer hair hides so much and is so forgiving. My face looks so hard and plain now because i didn't appreciate how much my long hair was doing the lifting! Also check if you don't mind the shape of your neck, shoulders and any neck hump as I literally feel so exposed now with mt neck hump.

There's a reason the bob is a classic haircut. It's what I'd have if I didn't think my hair suits me better short. Lots of variations for different hair types, etc.

My 6 year old! She wanted a classic short French bob, i was unsure but it really suits her. It seems to naturally dry in shape. She has a double crown and a natural side part and reasonably straight hair but not die straight.

HelenHywater · 13/06/2025 18:51

not me! I have the combination of fine, dead straight hair, and a round face. I basically look like Nicola Horlick.

BunfightBetty · 13/06/2025 18:52

Length is crucial. Avoid a shorter one if you have any hint of a double chin.

There are so many different types of bob and there’s one to suit everyone. My advice is to go to a really good hairdresser who can show you what will work for you.

I have a very classic vintage short 1920s/French bob and it’s SO easy - but it works with my hair. My hairdresser’s a bloody genius.

PosiePetal · 13/06/2025 20:08

They suit anyone, a good hairdresser will recommended how to have it cut to best suit your features.

Littlefish · 13/06/2025 20:46

I have had a bob in various lengths most of my life. I wash and blow dry my hair every day.

daff0di1 · 13/06/2025 20:59

I had a bob a few years ago, it looked awful!! Ive had long hair since, and now I want short hair but I really don't want a bob, I think there's a fine line and I'm scared to cross it lol

YYYDlilah · 13/06/2025 21:04

It's a precision cut, and a bad bob can look awful.

MeddlingGMIL · 14/06/2025 12:42

Thanks for taking time to reply. I think I'll go for it but play it sage and discuss with my hairdresser. She's in for a shock as I've been a long blonde lady for many years under her so I imagine she will discuss it in detail with me!

I've got a round/ heart shaped face with mid thick wavy hair. I don't style it often and only get it cut between every 2-6 months depending on how lazy/broke I am. I think it would be more work if you have straight hair. Mine's mid brown, so a contrast with very pale skin. I suspect you might need to style it more if you're blond otherwise it could look flatter and more washed out.

MoistVonL · 14/06/2025 12:54

My 6 year old looked like Louise Brookes with a bob, it was adorable. She’s all about long hair now.

I have a bob because I can just wash it, brush it and leave it to air dry. It is an absolute doddle and I get it cut every 10 weeks or so.

I don’t know if I’m lucky and that’s just the way my hair lies naturally or if everyone finds it the ultimate no-maintenance style. I certainly appreciate not having to faff with it.

Did you do it?!
