To think stamp duty rules will have to change again?

Do you think the new rules with their impact on house prices and the greater difficulty they make for simply moving at all will stay in place for long? I can’t see how it is going to be sustainable. We had planned to move but just can’t consider it now.

Only the 125-250k band changed from 0 to 2pc - so the max you'd be impacted by would be 5k?

Nothing else changed outside of buy to let - are you reading the rules correctly?

SDLT is an abomination. We have a severe housing shortage and the only effect of this tax is to penalise people from up-shifting and down-shifting as they need to. Replace it with a land value tax if needs be.

Exactly. It prevents people from making the most efficient use of the UKs limited housing stock. It also inhibits growth. It is widely regarded by tax wonks to be the stupidest tax ever.

It didn’t change, the ‘temporary’ relief was just removed. It was always going to happen.

DH and I planned to downsize once DC were at uni. We looked at what we’d pay in stamp duty and we’ll just stay put. Same for in laws, who are rattling around in a house that is far too big for them to manage in their 80’s and also about 5 hrs commute from us. We would all love them to move closer to us but stamp duty is just way too much.
