Fed up with horrible male characters!

I've SO had it with awful male TV detectives - Morck from Department Q being the most recent example. He can:

  1. Be a grumpy, sweary, rude colleague
  2. Be a shitty, neglectful stepfather
  3. Be a terrible friend
  4. Be incredibly violent in full view of the public
  5. Stalk his effing therapist!! Literally!!
  6. Be totally unprofessional

... and we are all supposed to love him and cheer him on, because why?? He's a man and good-looking? Has a heart of gold under all the swearing and violence? Is somehow a great detective in spite of his maverick methods?

Grrrr.

Hmmm - I think you have somewhat missed the point.

What is the point, then?

I agree with you OP. I watched Dept Q and I get that he's a fictional character in a very fictional police service in a fictional Edinburgh, but there was something so tiresome about him rehashing that type of man that I've grown up with and spent a lifetime excusing or reframing (no longer).

I don't like reading those sorts of characters, either. In fact, about a decade ago, I decided I'd mainly read books by women, because male writers are too likely to rehash the behaviour of men that I find least relaxing. It's been a great success.

springintoaction321 · 06/06/2025 12:36

@MatildaMovesMountains The point is, you can't judge a book by its cover - simple as that.

He's not all bad, you have to keep watching. I've got the final episode to watch today (no spoilers please!!) and thought it was a great series - gripping.

He stalks his therapist! He seeks her out at home! That's misconduct, and a criminal offence to boot as he's obtained her personal details illegally. But he is not held to account. I don't see how you can defend this.

I've seen it all and it's rubbish. How are the villains paying their massive electricity bill for starters? 😅

I'm also fed up with totally unrealistic stories of villains having such incredibly complicated, technologically advanced, expensive setups with no information on how they fund these.

Also, can you just own a hyperbaric chamber? It's a serious piece of kit! Is there not some inspector who checks on the nation's register of hyperbaric chambers every year or something? 😁

It's not real life, a goody two shoes would be awfully boring to watch.

Same with female characters

I don't want to watch abusive arseholes, though.

Anyway, it's not true. Unforgotten on ITV was a good watch, and all of the team were lovely to each other, usually. Really supportive.

springintoaction321 · 06/06/2025 12:48

🙄🙄🙄

I'm not defending anyone.

It's a fictional drama series. If you don't like - fair dues - don't watch it.

There is a big difference between a goody two shoes and a violent stalker 😅

How can i know if I like it before I've watched it? 🤔

I'm sorry this is so upsetting for some people - if you love this series, good for you! I am allowed to question the "violent, maverick man with heart of gold" trope without you having to try to prove me wrong.

Its not real op its just show if you dont like it dont watch it simple.
I cant stand what i call tough women acting fighting in heals taking down 3-4 huge men at one time.
But its just a drama / film etc its not real.
Actors reading from a script thats all it is.

screwyou · 06/06/2025 13:07

Totally agree although he is easy on the eye his character is awful.

BingoBling · 06/06/2025 13:13

At least put SPOILER ALERT in your title!! Ffs

You need to watch the first season of Ted Lasso as an instant antidote.

Yeah, the guy whose wife turns up trying to split up with him, he won't listen to her, and whatever he's done to make her cry incessantly is just glossed over? It gave me the chills.

Screamingabdabz · 06/06/2025 13:27

I agree op. I nearly stopped watching it as he was so ridiculous but the plot intrigued me. No one would tolerate that level of intolerant and unprofessional behaviour in real life. If I worked with a dick like that I’d be straight to HR.

MatildaMovesMountains · 06/06/2025 13:38

I don't mind a character being mouthy, or unconventional, or a bit rough around the edges, or bending the rules a bit, but I do object to violent, abusive, illegal behaviours being glossed over. See also Luther.

I've just got round to watching Sweetpea that I've had recorded for ages and never got round to. You might like it, OP, it's the complete opposite of the show you're describing. So far we're up to 4 dead men and every one of them deserved it.
