Care home fees?

I was hoping someone could advise/has any knowledge of this.

My nan passed away last August, care home fees were £139k but had not been paid as my mum and uncle did not have POA so had no way of selling her flat (she didn't have capacity to do so herself, dementia). They have waited for probate, that came through after 7 weeks, they put the flat on the market and it has now sold and should be completed by end of July. The problem is my uncle (who was NOK) has received a letter stating the unpaid care home fees are £148k. So this is 9k more than it was when she passed, and there is some confusion as to whether they have continued to charge for my nan's room but seems unlikely? Or worst still, it's interest that has accrued due to 'non-payment' but there was no way of paying it in a rush as the money was tied up in the flat. My mum and uncle stand to get very little as it is as the majority of the sale money is going to the care home obviously, but it's quite disheartening, do care home fees charge this much interest over 10 months? They have obviously contacted my nans solicitor who has dealt with all this but she's away until monday. Thanks in advance!

They do charge a lot. I think my dad’s care home was £1200 per week back in 2020. When he died and I sold his flat the outstanding bill was 90k. He died on Monday 20th and we were still billed for the room till the end of the month. The interest did ramp up but I believe it was included in the amount outstanding rather than added on.

Have you spoken with care home as to why it's increased? I suspect it's interest.

My Nan currently pays £4.5k a month. My mum will inherit nothing. It will all go in on care

my mother in law is just going into a home, to be funded by the sale of her house. We have been told that the home will put a charge on the house to cover outstanding fees. The first six months will be interest free but if the house has not sold in that time they will , understandably charge interest going forward as they can’t carry the debt interest free indefinitely!
