To refuse to meet (possible measles)

7 week old nephew has been exposed to measles and had to have an immunity boosting injection.

My dd is 2.5 and has only had the first mmr vaccine. Am I right that I should now keep her away from nephew for next three weeks until we know if he will contract it?

Why has your DD only had one MMR injection? I’d be spending my time trying to get her brought up to date with her immunisations. Your nephew won’t be the only person exposed to measles at the moment, levels are really high in the community because people are not up to date with the vaccination schedule and therefore putting others at risk - herd immunity

Because the second MMR vaccine is not given until 3yrs 4months according to the UK vaccine schedule…

@40andfeelingit she is 2.5. The second dose is when she’s 3.

But to answer your question OP, no idea what the medical advice is, but I would keep her away for 3 weeks as you suggest. Would this be a major problem?

Ipw · 04/06/2025 06:15

@KabukiNoh its not ideal as they don’t see each other much and we’d arranged the next week for various play dates. Just rubbish timing

My bad. It’s being changed to the second dose being given at 18 months. I thought that had happened but it’s from July 1st and not for children born before a certain date.

Mymanyellow · 04/06/2025 06:19

I wouldn’t be meeting up in this scenario. Hope your little nephew is ok.

Oneearringlost · 04/06/2025 06:21

What is the immune boosting injection at 7 weeks that your nephew had?
Immuno-globulin?
Is this the UK?

Oneearringlost · 04/06/2025 06:22

Definitely keep your DD away.

Ipw · 04/06/2025 06:22

Thanks everyone. I feel so stressed as I know there will be huge family pressure to meet.

@Oneearringlost not sure they just said it was an immunity boosting injection as couldn’t have the actual vaccine

Measles is incredibly infectious (like 9/10 people exposed get it), so I wouldn’t risk it.

That's a real shame but you should stand firm on this. Look up some of the terrible effects of measles to quote if needed. Lots of people think it's just a harmless childhood disease.

GRex · 04/06/2025 07:05

Ask your GP if she can be given her booster early.

I wouldn't risk exposure and I hope your nephew doesn't catch it.

Eenameenadeeka · 04/06/2025 07:05

I'd stay away, I hope your wee nephew is okay, so scary with such a little baby

Koalafan · 04/06/2025 07:15

Tell the family that it's just not worth the risk, measles is contagious and can be very serious.
