Random services people use

Hi everyone! 😊

After seeing another thread where lots of people mentioned being signed up for a bin cleaning service (which I’d never even heard of before), I got curious.

What other services do people use? Aside from the usual ones like general cleaning, window cleaning, gardening, ironing, magazine subscriptions, or even cooking subscriptions, are there any useful services you swear by?

I have to admit, I don’t use any of those myself, but the bin cleaning idea is definitely making me think 😁

Milkman. Everything else costs a fortune.

RunningNananananananananana · 04/06/2025 16:46

I wouldn't class the milkman as a random service 🄓

@buffyandspikeandfaith ooh! Can you let me know who you used? That’s exactly what we need for one of our sofas.

Ketzele · 04/06/2025 17:03

In London there is a handyman service called Silver Saints, which I have used a lot. They charge by the hour, so I save up a load of tasks and get them done together. They're also very polite and clean up after themselves.

I also found a gutter cleaning company run by two well presented young brothers. I booked them just before Christmas and they gave me a box of chocolates, so they are definitely coming again!

Sure! There’s a video about measuring but if you need help they’re quick to reply by phone/email too

I have someone come and scoop my dogs’ poop from their yard

CruCru · 04/06/2025 17:28

I know of a woman who cleans urine crystals out of horses’ penises. All the owners of male horses at the stable sign up and she turns up and deals with them all.

I saw this done on a vet show one time. Its called sheath cleaning and they remove 'beans' of hardened smegma by hand from the horses penis.
Please don't google it- you can never unsee the photos 😱

That sounds amazing! There are people near me who do this but the cost is quite high £350 to do a 3 hr wardrobe decluttering and £350 for 3hr shopping trip

Where is yours based? I'm in SW London

looking at the website, prices depending on stylists are:

Decluttering duration: 2 Hours from £115-£125
Duration: 3 Hours from £160-£175
Duration: 4 Hours from £205-£225,

online shops from £35 to £90

3 hours personal shop from £175 to £190 to £210 in London

They work around Bluewater/ Brighton/ Westfield Shepherds , Guildford, Birmingham, Solihull or Kingston

Honestly the team is brilliant!

Worms are fabulous creatures!

Can’t help a phobia. Anything wriggly and I have a freak out. I have no issues with spiders etc.

Off point but are there places in the U.K. where the council don’t collect food waste and it still goes in the main bin?

Yes many places in the East Midlands.

Your phrase "beans of hardened smegma" is genuinely one of the funniest things I've ever read. I'm absolutely cracking up here.

I won't Google - your written description is more than enough.

GetOffTheCounter · 05/06/2025 13:24

Yeah I echo don't google. I am a former keen rider and every now and then videos come up on my local horse facebook page. I have a tough stomach I think... but.. no

I think regular use of nasal decongestants can actually cause decongestion (essentially a withdrawal reaction). May be worth looking into if you’re suffering long term? (Appreciate could also be allergies etc.)

Thank you, I did actually read about that so I’ve been careful not to use it too much.

It’s more the case of just knowing it’s there, that’s why I have so many spares because they are on the repeat subscription but not being used.

This thread has been a good reminder to pause the subscription though!

Sounds great, I’m near one of those places listed. Can you add the website or send me a pm? TIA

PiggieWig · 08/06/2025 00:04

I absolutely love fresh cotton sheets on my bed. If I’m feeling really fancy, I pay a local ironing lady a fiver to iron them.

BooneyBeautiful · 08/06/2025 00:16

BIWI · 03/06/2025 16:18

Carpets cleaned every 6 months; ovens cleaned once a year. Both things I couldn’t/don’t want to do myself!

I bought my oven from Curry's and have appliance cover with them. The cover also includes an annual clean, but I have to remember to book it each year.

Due to disability I have a cleaner each week who also kindly does extra jobs for me as required (I obviously pay her accordingly), and she cleans my carpets each Spring, although I only have carpet on my stairs, landing and in two of the bedrooms.

Hkakge · 08/06/2025 00:20

I use a posh coffee bean subscription company. I also have an annual chimney sweep and gutter clean. I worked somewhere once in a posh office that had a huge tropical fish tank and they used a fish tank maintenance company.

BooneyBeautiful · 08/06/2025 00:24

MattCauthon · 03/06/2025 16:50

I'm not sure this is unusual but I have an ironing service - they collect, iron, and drop off.

I read a post from a woman on here many many years ago who said she had a monthly handyman. He came first thursay of every month (or whatever) and her and her DH would just make a note of things they needed doing as the month progressed, then send him the list a few days before and he would then turm up and do it all. Anything from fixing a fence to repainting a skirting board to hanging pictures. DH and I have agreed that when we win the lottery, we are getting such a service! Grin. I think it's bloody brilliant!

I just copied this and sent it to my usual handyman/window cleaner as I think it's something he could do. It would be an excellent source of income for him!

What's automatic repeat prescription ordering? Isn't that what a repeat prescription is? Or am I missing something painfully obvious.

Subscription not prescription I think the poster means.

Dog washing A van round here goes to people's houses and bathes their dogs

I have a mobile groomer who comes to me very three months to groom my dog. It's well worth the money, although dog doesn't like it. It's not the groomers fault though as he didn't like the previous two either. It just seems to make him very anxious, but he does need to be washed and his coat cut regularly.

I doubt it as I believe the government has insisted on every area having a recycling service.

BooneyBeautiful · 08/06/2025 00:35

MadisonAvenue · 04/06/2025 00:40

Yes, we’re with South Staffs council and it’s not collected here. I don’t think that East Staffs council where my son lives collect it either.

That's interesting. I was under the impression that the government had made it compulsory that every Council offered a recycling service.
