Toenail fallen off (sorry I know it's gross)

My toenail has come away from the base and the entire thing has come off. What should I do now to protect it and help the new tissue grow?

Nothing really, the nail will grow back eventually

I’m not sure you need to do much really, the new nail tends to be there and slowly thicken up from previous experience. Just avoid damaging it as it establishes itself I guess.

I’ve lost a few nails in my running days, they all grew back normally. I injured my big toe a couple of weeks ago and that nail is going to come off. I think it will take a while, it’s very purple and looks hideous. My plan is to get a pedicure and nails done and hide it🤣

Same thing happened to me, it’s grown back again.

Nothing, after a couple of days it stops being sensitive and will grow back as good as new. Quite a weird experience the first time it happens though!

Tessiebear2023 · 01/06/2025 20:44

That's happened to me before. I just kept it clean and put a bit of antiseptic cream over it for a few days to stop any bugs getting on it. It will heal quicker than you think, as long as you don't have a 50 mile hike planned!

If it gets sore or swollen go straight to the pharmacist for some advice.

Been there.
You can get lil silicone toe covers to help keep it clean. Good for beach

I agree with everyone else, it will slowly grow back. It's bloody painful when the last bit needs to come off. It's happened to me 3 times now with same big toe.
