To ask for your worst holiday ever?

5amisthenew7am · 01/06/2025 06:06

We’ve just got back from what I think was our worst holiday ever.

It rained heavily for 6 days out of 7
The kids fought all day, every day
I had to keep logging on for work because of a crisis situation
We went with my parents who made every excuse not to spend time with us and basically just took themselves off for lovely day trips without us. They didn’t lift a finger to help
Me and one DC both got D&V
The pool at the villa was absolutely freezing with giant bugs in it so nobody wanted to do any swimming
Our flights were delayed there and back

We actually went somewhere really beautiful and I’d been looking forward to it for months. The trip cost so much money and I honestly have never been so happy to get home.

I would love to hear others stories to make me feel better!

Because they would be shifting in a minute and wanted to do family trips. We did after a few days and they shifted to join us but there was huffing and puffing.

and this “shifting” went on for hours?

after day 1 of hours of waiting until they were ready to go out, I’d have packed days bags the night before planned, agreed time to be leaving the next day and where we would be going over dinner, and then…. Stuck to it, with or without them.

odd to have spoilt the holiday for yourself and your family to accommodate selfish in laws wanting to read the paper.

Ours was back in the 90's. Tour company accompanied us on the flight from Gatwick to Turkey.
Arrived in the early hours via a dirt track road. Small block of flats had only just been completed minus running water. Water had to be pumped from a tractor that was carrying a tank.

We were opposite a petrol station, this was robbed persons used a gun!

There were person in the flats that came home drunk at 4am every morning screaming and shouting and they were jumping from their balconies into the swimming pool.

After 4 days we got dysentery extremely bad.

We could not go out as it was 100 degrees without air con.

Complained to the tour rep and requested to go home after 7 days this was refused.

It took us weeks to get over, never again.

OH hired a colleague’s apartment in southern Spain for half-term in October. She’d told us to get taxi from airport & hire a car in the resort. Thankfully we hired one at airport because when we arrived at resort every shop, restaurant, car hire was closed as it had shut down for winter. We would have been stranded . We were both ill and took turns in pushing our 15 month old round the empty streets whilst the other slept. We drove out to somewhere like Benidorm at night just to get something to eat. It rained every day & we were constantly watching DS when we were in the apartment, frightened he would damage something. On the final day we went to the airport in the morning about 10 hours before our flight, we just wanted to go home. We had had a terrible bereavement earlier in the year & had been looking forward to a bit of sun and rest. We have never since stayed in anyone’s private property— it was too traumatic.

Please come back and elaborate on this @DoggyLoverz because there is so much about this that doesn’t make sense

I wonder if dad’s girlfriend was annoyed his ex wife had turned up?? Pretty weird.

Bully for you. You'd obviously have handled it far better than me. However, in the early days of a marriage, I wasn't sure of their habits.

Not me but I’ve seen many many videos on TikTok of a delayed flight from California to Orlando and the flight was stuck on the tarmac for 5 hours because of storms in Orlando and someone (flight attendant and parent) thought the best thing to do was to get a 12/13 yr old girl to sing Moana over the tanoy to 300 hostages and because it was over tbe tanoy all the films and music on the entertainment system was paused for them to listen to it.. I’ve seen so many point of views from that flight. Delta have apologised. Don’t sing if your audience can’t leave..

Oh no 😂😂 Where can I find this?

See people were telling me this about Egypt, but we just spent a week in Hurghada with no food issues whatsoever but I guess it depends on the resort. The food at our hotel was very safe. No one in our party got ill and I didn't hear of anyone having food related issues at our hotel.

Some things really pleasantly surprised me in Egypt - like how amazingly well organised and easy the airport in Hurghada was with no queues for anything (unlike the MASSIVE security queue at Stansted) or how seriously the lifeguards monitored water safety (at the hotel aqua park and the beach). Felt very safe.

Edited

Would you mind dropping the details of your hotel? Considering visiting Egypt at some point.

I wonder whether dad was the primary suspect

given they’d been viciously arguing
he’d left her at the holiday home and supposedly not since her again

@Aposterhasnoname the holiday was bad enough but I think the song on repeat would have driven me over the edge.

I've been lucky with holidays but stupidly went to UAE in my early 20s. Dubai was the worst part, I've never been leared at or disrespected so much, despite fully covering up and abiding but all local rules.

It's got such a nasty undercurrent to the while place - superiority, sexism, racism, homophobia, slave labour etc.

I honestly would have been jailed if I strayed any longer as being somewhere like that where you have to shut your mouth for fear of consequence is horrific.

There are loads of other places in the world I would love to see but won't go because of their treatment of women. Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco and many more unfortunately.

It was your husband, their son, role then. To communicate with his parents and explain it wasn’t working for his family

Egypt as a teen. There were some interesting/fun bits but I was sexually assaulted twice and the friend I went with was more focused on shagging the barman in our resort than anything else. Also got food poisoning (it was an all inclusive so couldn't face any of the food there after that!)

Ah yes, and all to fall out early in the holiday.

Alternatively, one goes with the flow, learns a little and doesn't do it again.

However, you at least, sound as though you like a jolly good ruck.

You remember it as the worst holiday of your life so “going with the flow” sounds awful

and if a son suggesting the family agree a plan and time to leave for a holiday trip the next day that works around DS (their grandchild no less), means a big family blow up…. Then you’re right, this isn’t a family I should be offering advice on because I have no experience of this kind of family

Morocco is fine! Been many times since I was small, used to live there as a child and have returned a lot (I'm now 40 and last went when I was 35). You'll get hassled to buy stuff but I've never been sexually harassed. The most I've had was the standard joke of buying me for camels.

Egypt was a surprise in that I felt like I was being pursued/letched over constantly and had two separate men thrust their erections at me 🤢 I was dressed appropriately etc but apparently fair game as an English teenager

Egypt as a single mum. The weather was fabulous and I met some truly wonderful people. But outside resort in the local town I was treated terribly by men. I felt very very unsafe. Also I got the shits just before the transfer coach and had to immodium myself to the hilt.

Mine is also egypt for the same reasons.

At hotel got harrassed entire trip by hotel staff trying to sell us activites and excursions. Wouldnt give up. Also harassed by russian men who would leave their wives and kids at the family pool and come and letch over the women at the adult pool.

Outside hotel the harassment was relentless. Felt very unsafe and we had all travelled widely on our own.

We all got the shits.

Did Mount Sinai and ended up really cross at the abuse of animals (having to haul lazy, overweight tourists up the mount).

If I was offered a free luxury trip to visit the pyramids, I would 100% turn it down.

The holiday to a Greek island with the psycho ex where he forced me to walk up and down mountains in 40 degree heat whilst mocking me for being unfit and fat and all the while he was cheating on me with his ex-wife's 17 year old niece. On day 2 I stood on a rusty part of the door to the appartment and cut my foot to pieces and he just went off in a huff and left me for a day. I was so unhappy. Then we came home and he told me he was going on holiday on his stupid motorbike. Unbeknownst to me it was to see the ex's niece, barely more than a child and at that point I knew it was a sexual relationship with this girl from reading his phone (which I know he left open on purpose). He then attempted to make me homeless and I managed to rescue some of my money and do a runner. I've never been back to Greece.

Best holiday: probably a fab camping trip to Europe with my female friends

Ugh yeah. I was invited to go with the kids to stay at my dad’s new girlfriend’s villa in Portugal. She was late collecting us from the airport, turned up in a foul mood and then didn’t speak the whole way back. Then the two of them fought for most of the time we were there with me and the kids trapped in our bedroom as the villa was open plan and we didn’t dare leave.

My daughter was bursting for a wee but she ended up going in a bowl I found under the bed as I didn’t dare leave the room. Anyway, after 3 days of tension, we left (along with my mum) to check into a hotel where it rained for the remainder of the holiday before going home. It was shit.

About three weeks after the holiday dad got a phone call from her friend to say she’d died 🙄

This is bonkers, so your mum was also on holiday at your dad's new girlfriend's villa? Maybe that's why she was in a mood 😂

Some of these are genuine misfortune and/or hilarious (I know the Ice Cube "muthafucka" family dance along shouldn't be funny, but it really is!)

However, others are just poor planning or ignoring the bloody obvious. Eg booking a holiday cottage in the Lake District with a dog, then being surprised the garden isn't secure, and then being surprised there are tourists everywhere (tip - it's very easy to find quiet spots in the Lakes with great pubs at any time of year, just avoid the likes of Bowness like the plague).

Or complaining that you can't put paper down the toilet in Greece. Well that's normal too in huge swathes of the world; not just Greece. Hardly something to be surprised by.

Yes and people taking 'blended' families on holiday together and then complaining when the kids don't behave or get on 🙄

VWT5 · 01/06/2025 15:59

This month - Stansted airport during the “power outage” (3rd there in a year but seemingly kept under the radar…..)
Queued 12 hours from 3 a.m, 6 hours to get to the boarding gate, no water, no toilet, due to sheer volume of people, total recklessness and mismanagement by the airport authority, low to no staffing and no emergency plan being implemented. Up to 20,000 people affected.
Refused boarding at the gate, the aircraft departed, completely lost the holiday.

South of France, restaurant toilet a single cubicle on a rocky promontory in view of the diners. Before flushing, you were supposed to open the door, step out and then reach back in to flush. But of course it was a spectator sport, no one told you, you flushed and water washed everything right where you stood, right over your feet, over the rock and into the sea - in full view of cheering onlookers.

Ski trip to Austria, the aircraft in UK was unserviceable so we had to go by coach - a nightmare 48 hrs roads blocked with snow - and as we arrived at destination, the single lady in front of me got up, walked down the coach steps and literally died right there (in the arms of her daughter who was the chalet ski rep waiting to meet us tragically).
