Buying alcohol in M&S

KimberleyClark · 31/05/2025 15:34

Bought a bottle of wine in M&S this morning, when I scanned it nothing came up about needing authorisation. There were signs up about cameras, and I wondered if they are now using AI to determine whether people are underage?

So is there now a market for a stick on silicone "wrinkly-face"?

One would think so, if they are actually using AI!

I've sometimes noticed cameras above the self-service tills which I think are monitored by the person on the kiosk or customer service stand. In my case (I'm 63) it's perfectly obvious that I'm old enough to buy alcohol so I don't usually have to wait to be verified by a roving assistant.

I know I've been in a supermarket- can't remember which though definitely not M &S - and bought ibuprofen once and not had to have it authorised. I was really surprised at the time.

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g 's suggestion about the use of the till mirrors makes sense of it now though.

There's cameras on the self scans In most places and another main till. Usually the cigarette kiosk if ita nearby can approve it

That's what happens in coop near me

Tiredofwhataboutery · 31/05/2025 18:57

At my local co op they monitor you from the cigarette till opposite and will authorise purchases from there.

Till mirrors?! You mean where I fix my fringe before leaving the supermarket 😲

I don't need one...

There no kiosk as such in this M&S Simply Food, I mean they don’t sell fags or lottery tickets, but I suppose someone could have been monitoring me from somewhere!

I used to work in Asda and before they changed all their self service till we used to just authorise on one machine for all 12 tills then they changed to the ones you physically have to go up and authorise.
