To not know there is (allegedly) a kissing code

For messages as opposed to physical?
So I was told 1 kiss at the end of a message means friends, 2 means a kiss from me to you and 3 is flirty. Is this a thing. ?

It's not cool to put kisses in texts.

My DDs think that it's absolutely insane that my friends put kisses at the end of messages, as do most people my age.

Todayisaday · 31/05/2025 13:32

Erm no. But it is cultural. Different cultures have different greetings.

MorrisonsPlatter · 31/05/2025 13:33

Or BURMA or NORWICH.

paranoiaofpufflings · 31/05/2025 13:36

I don’t ever add x’s to texts. People sometimes think I’m being rude or blunt but I’m not. If I was speaking in person to you I wouldn’t randomly kiss you afterwards, so why would I write x at the end of a message?

The whole meaning behind emojis baffles me to, and I haven’t watched adolescence so it’s over my head. Like a pp above I use hearts of different colours to relate to football teams or whatever. Perhaps I’m causing mass offence or sending wrong messages. Something can only really have a valid alternative meaning if everyone knows though.

Definitely not 13, I am over 50 which is why I thought it may have passed me by. The person that told me, in fact not just me as there were a few of us there was a male in his early 30s.

I only just found out a thumbs up now means a passive aggressive insult. I can’t cope with kissing codes too!

I find them weird tbh. If I wouldn’t kiss you in person then why would I pretend to in a message? I generally just reply with the number they sent to me, and none at all to men because I cba with hassle.

Muffinmam · 31/05/2025 14:01

Kisses at the end of a text mean nothing 🍑🍆

NicolaCasanova · 31/05/2025 14:04

Since menopause no x and certainly no xx or xxx as no energy to waste. Also write work emails like a man.

PorgyandBess · 31/05/2025 14:09

Are you 12, OP? 😂

I’m a grown up. I can’t stand kisses on texts. Many women I know use them like some sort of mimsy punctuation. They’ll put them on messages like ‘what time are we meeting? x’
I can guarantee they had bubbles over their letter ‘i’s at school.

Crikey I do use a thumbs up to show I have read and understood a message…I must be in the dog house with so many people !

For DH and I, xxx is the norm.

"xxx" indicates anything from mildly irritated to quite angry. So: yeah I am signing off with kisses but I'm just letting you know you're in some kind of trouble.
No kisses at all (doesn't happen often) is pretty much saying divorce is on the table.

We find it to be quite useful shorthand!

I used to be like this. Separated temporarily and then never brought them back! They’re pointless and when you actually read texts back, nonsensical 😂

people read into them far too much so now I put none. (Unless it’s a new acquaintance then I put x in case they’re on the tetchy side)

Raquelos · 31/05/2025 14:36

No clue about the kissing code.

As an insensitive Gen Xer, after an overheard convo in the pub, I do now make sure I match the number of kisses from my millennial friends to avoid making them sad though. Bless their needy little socks 😁

Throwmoneyatit · 31/05/2025 14:36

I'm a 3 kisses kisser usually but my phone has started autocorrecting them to 4 so everyone gets more lovely kisses off me.

If I don't put any, I'm not going to be the best company 🤣

DinoLil · 31/05/2025 14:38

What now????

Titasaducksarse · 31/05/2025 14:40

God I send about 6 so I'm a real slag 🤣

ThatNaiceMember · 31/05/2025 15:03

I always put three - not a code (although if someone I love is annoying me I do only put one 🤣) I think there can only be a code if both the sender and receiver understand it otherwise it's just bollocks

Exactly. Middle sis, dad and I use thumbs up to mean agree. We all know this.

Little sis uses it as a pass agg move and we know this too.

Paperweight7 · 31/05/2025 16:20

I've used 4 or 5 xxxxx before to a really close friend going through a hard time. Does that mean we are married? 🤔

I might need to break the news to her.

mondaytosunday · 31/05/2025 16:30

🙄 It’s only code if the people sending/receiving know its code. I avoid any misunderstanding by not putting x anywhere - it’s kinda yuk really.

outerspacepotato · 31/05/2025 16:38

🤡

Cucy · 31/05/2025 17:04

I wouldn’t send a text to a boss with kisses on the end.

Typically you are right.

If it’s someone I’m not that close to I’ll put an X on the end.
If it’s a closer friend or a boyfriend I’ll put XX on the end.

However it depends on the person as some of my friends put 4 or 5 kisses and I’ll typically do the same as them.
It’s usually friends who I’m close with but I don’t speak to as often so put extra kisses on the end.

If I’m sending regular messages back and forward then I usually put none or just 1.
