B&Q think ‘girls’ cant do stuff

Coralleadery · 27/05/2025 11:29

B&Q have listed a flatpack cabinet with the description ‘easy to assemble, even for a girl’

At the same time they’re running a big ‘purpose’ advertising campaign around encouraging female tradespeople.

Apologies for the DM link - I couldn’t see a better one (The Sun?!)

Apology after B&Q says cabinet can be built 'even if you are a girl'

The 140cm x 33cm flatback bamboo unit appeared on the company website decorated with toiletries and attractive-looking plants.

JFC! Seriously? Are we in the 1980s?

LizzoBennett · 27/05/2025 11:32

**

PersephoneSmith · 27/05/2025 11:32

No they don’t. It was a third party seller and removed immediately.

GreyCarpet · 27/05/2025 11:33

Well, they've just lost my custom.

And I have a long memory. I haven't had a Yorkie bar since Nestlé announced they weren't for girls 😁

Is that true?

lifemakeover · 27/05/2025 11:35

GreyCarpet · 27/05/2025 11:34

Is that true?

Yes - it says so in the statement issued by B&Q in the article.

Stickortwigs · 27/05/2025 11:36

B&Q act as a big marketplace for other sellers, like Amazon. It was a third party vendor. I imagine B&Q are going mad about it.

ArtemisiaTheArtist · 27/05/2025 11:36

Oh this reminds me of that old campaign for Yorkie chocolate bars but that was 30 years ago or more....

Coffeeishot · 27/05/2025 11:37

It was probably a joke that didn't land properly i mean it isnt particularlyfunny but i reckon it was supposed to be "hilarious", DM frothing though!

BallerinaRadio · 27/05/2025 11:37

So it was a third party seller and B&Q have already apologised. Not that much of a story and not worth the faux outrage.

Coffeeishot · 27/05/2025 11:40

Op you could have lifted it from the sun why do you think DM is any better that's just what they did read the sun article and printed it on their own page.

Vivienne1000 · 27/05/2025 11:41

Think there are bigger fish to fry. Stupid comment, but not worth trying to ruin a company.

Ifailed · 27/05/2025 11:41

Typical DM nonsense, a sensationalist head-line that is contradicted lower down in the text.

IfYouPutASausageInItItsNotAViennetta · 27/05/2025 11:42

To be fair, it's quite a challenging task for any child - girl or boy.

Not sure why they only specified girl, though.

CatamaranViper · 27/05/2025 11:43

It was a third party seller but B&Q still added it to their website. Regardless of who wrote it, the company is responsible for what is published on their website. Someone saw that and didn't do or say anything.

Hoppinggreen · 27/05/2025 11:44

Thankfully B&Q realised, pulled the item and apologised.
No harm done

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 27/05/2025 11:46

I think it was a reference to the 'I'm just a girl' movement that is going around online

But it doesn't work 😄

Yes, B&Q are responsible for what's on their website. Which is why they've apologised and removed it. But it's entirely likely that no-one at B&Q looked at that third-party item or manually added it. If it's anything like Amazon marketplace the third-party just uploads it directly to B&Q's site with no intervention.

UnderratedCabbage · 27/05/2025 11:48

Quite disappointed that everything is now basically open market place full of AliBaba resale so no shop will guarantee quality.

Me neither. The ridiculous 'not for girls' sales campaign is still the first thing I think of if I see a Yorkie bar.

657904I · 27/05/2025 11:54

To be honest the whole ad screams temu

I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a clumsy translation for example, it’s likely resold Temu junk by a 3rd party so the original description was likely in another language where saying shit like that is more common.

Coralleadery · 27/05/2025 11:58

It doesn’t matter if it was a third party seller. What a cheek to run a big ad campaign around championing female tradespeople when they’re not even bothering to check who they’re doing business with. It’s every little micro-aggression like this that puts women and girls off of doing ‘male’ things.

They’d have a lot more effect on increasing female tradespeople if they worked on educating businesses who they’re working with and making sure stuff like this doesn’t happen. But I guess that would involve real change that can’t be shouted about in a TV ad eh.

Yorkie - YES- I used to love the Yorkie truck Easter egg and still remember my confusion when they suddenly announced it ‘wasn’t for girls.’ It’s a really vivid memory for me. I hadn’t realised before that there were boy and girl things.

I have ASD so when I was a child I honestly thought that if I ate a yorkie I’d die 😂 I took the ‘not for girls’ very seriously !!
