Art gcse raw score question

DaringFinch · 23/05/2025 21:20

Does anyone understand what it all means? Y.p just received art gcse raw score marks . 67 for coursework and 69 for the exam. He thought he was on track for grade 6 minimum but was aspiring for a 7 or 8 and will be disappointed if not . I don't really care so long as he passes but he has put so much effort and time in it will be a shame if he only gets a 5 as he was hoping to do A level and needs a 6 as.a minimum for that.

Google aqa art gcse grade boundaries.
Exam is 40%, coursework is 60%.
Looks roughly on the borderline between two grades when looking at the grade boundaries from last year. Depends where they place the grade boundaries this year on what he will get.

SilverBlue56 · 23/05/2025 22:25

The two raw marks are scaled ..I can't remember how, but if you search you can find the specification and will tell you. Somehow, they turn these two marks into a figure that's out of 480.

But for a ball park figure, my son did AQA 3D design last year and got 66 and 80 and his overall was a 7. There's not a huge difference in his score to your son's so I would be surprised if he ended up with a 5. Obviously no one knows the grade boundaries til results day though.

Do some digging and you'll be able to work it out. The portfolio and the exam piece marks are differently weighted.

ClownsDontHaveNipples · 23/05/2025 22:27

Exams Officer here. The raw marks for each unit are out of 96. Based on last year's grade boundaries, 67 for the coursework unit would be a high 6 (1 mark away from a 7), 69 for the external unit would be a low 7.

BookArt55 · 23/05/2025 22:29

Both out of 96.

INeverSeeYou · 23/05/2025 22:47

@ClownsDontHaveNipplesshould we have been given Component 1 score before now? That would have helped improve Component 2, I feel.

Can it be appealed on results day or only as part of NEA process now?

ClownsDontHaveNipples · 23/05/2025 22:54

@INeverSeeYou Students should be informed of their marks before they are submitted, with sufficient time for them to request a review and the centre to carry the review out. The AQA deadline is 31st May, so most schools will have submitted their marks now with it being half term.

Paintandpots · 23/05/2025 22:55

I have worked in schools where they would accept a 5 at GCSE. Personally I'd trust the raw mark and wait till grade results come out. The whole giving out raw marks doesn't make sense to me, it's not like you get your raw math exam mark before the grade.

Anyway advice:

  • See how he does with his English grades, if he gets a 5 in English language and literature and gets a 5 in art i think he can make his case to say he can manage the A level course. This is due to the fact that the a level course has an essay element to it.
  • If he gets a 6 then no worries and plain sailing.
  • If however he gets a 5 for the art course and a 4 for English then maybe he can present his case by completing a summer mini project to show that his dedication really is in the art course?
  • Honestly sounds like he is doing well so far. Tell him to focus on his other exams and not to worry about his next step till he gets his grades in August. Just to do his best.

Coming from an ex-art teacher. Packed it in for the stay at home with little ones life and honestly it is what i'd say to them too.

My child’s raw marks are:
Course Work 64/96
Exam 60/96

It’s hard to guess with the unknown grade boundaries so we shall wait and see on results day.

Thank you so much for responding @ClownsDontHaveNipples - I hope you don't mind that I've sent you a DM as I want to know I've done everything I can do support my DD

2024 grade boundaries in link below. To get the mark out of 480 scale coursework mark to 60% and exam to 40% by multiplying component 1 score by 3 and component 2 by 2.

Last year 60 was the grade boundary for a 6, 68 for a 7. To work it out - Coursework gradex3 plus examgradex2 then divide by 5 - he comes out just in a 7. The work still needs to be moderated by AQA so those scores may change anyway.

Applesarenice · 24/05/2025 12:49

Oh and grade boundaries may change

This will likely be a solid 6 unless the moderator changes the grades

Thank you. My DD guesstimated a 6 and they would be happy with that.
