My husband has too many coats!!

It’s driving me mad. He has an obsession with coats and clothes. I feel like I’m drowning as they take up so much space. I counted today and he has 70 coats. I feel like I could kill him now for all the fucking space this is taking up in our home. What do others think?

Start getting rid of them one by one....he won't notice if there are so many......

CagneyNYPD1 · 22/05/2025 21:53

I was about to post that my DH likes a coat and a jacket as well. But then I read 70! Blimey, that’s ridiculous.

Pootles34 · 22/05/2025 21:54

Could he put some in vac packed bags, perhaps the out of season ones?

Gagamama2 · 22/05/2025 21:55

70?!?!

my partner moans about how many coats I have, which is about 10 incl ski jackets, waterproofs, smart coats, long winter one, etc etc. I can’t understand how he would need 70?! Agree with pp, quietly remove one per week that you haven’t seen him wearing in ages. I wonder how many you can reduce it to before he notices…?

Bluebonnet3 · 22/05/2025 22:01

Make him watch ‘sort your life out’ on iplayer.

soupyspoon · 22/05/2025 22:03

Does he look good and turned out smartly?

Some people love their clothes and shoes. Im one of them. I need more storage space and more wardrobe space. I need a dressing room actually.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 22/05/2025 22:04

1 in, 10 out rule? Has he literally got every coat he’s owned since he’s been 15? Im having the same conversation but I think we are down to 25. He’s somewhat focussed now on long term investment stuff.

Cnidarian · 22/05/2025 22:04

Seventy coats?!!! OK, I'm going to need you to ask him why he needs so many coats, how does he categorise them (by season, colour, activity?!) which are his favourites and report back, I need to hear this ridiculous and glorious explanation!

Iloveanicegarden · 22/05/2025 22:06

I share your pain. DH is a collector/hoarder with so many 'collections' - silk shirts bought in second hand shops, ties, bow ties, waistcoats (at least 20) and never worn except when we go away and that's come to an end now, even tuxedos. A lovely jacket hangs unworn and never will be. We've got enough books for a library, enough audio/DVDs to watch/listen to for years. And then there's all the wood/veneers to start a business, together with all the bench tools that are still boxed.. I feel like a spare part in this house. He goes off in a temper if I mention anything about all this

Cnidarian · 22/05/2025 22:06

Where do you even keep seventy coats? Is your house entirely made of coats?!

Dawnchorusiswonderful · 22/05/2025 22:09

I was just going to ask that!

You must have some size of house to be able to have his 70 coats, the rest of his clothes and , presumably your clothes too.

Parky04 · 22/05/2025 22:10

My DH has 1 jacket which he has owned for 20 years. I keep telling him to by another one!

Topseyt123 · 22/05/2025 22:15

Wow! 70 coats!! Is there enough room for you and your family in your house?

I thought my DH was bad here, but he only has about a dozen coats so I suppose I should count myself lucky. 😲🤣

Coffeeishot · 22/05/2025 22:15

I'm going to add to.the, where does he keep seventy coats ? That sounds stressful op.i would be overwhelmed too,

Gunz · 22/05/2025 23:51

I am wondering where he stores 70 coats. I am in the midst of downsizing for a move and had a massive clearout - down to around 5 casual wears and one posh coat for more special occasions. Recommend your husband looks at Marie Kondo on how she decides what to keep.

scotstars · 22/05/2025 23:58

Even half this number would be taking up too much space for my liking! My dad had alot of coats when he passed away I donated then to a homeless charity could you suggest something like this? Even getting 20 out would be a good start and vacuum pack out of season 1s away

Ellmau · 22/05/2025 23:59

70 is rather a lot. Do they all still fit? Does he wear them all over the course of a year?

StillweriseLH · 23/05/2025 00:06

There’s no doubt that 70 is ridiculous, however I also fundamentally disagree with all the posters suggesting you just throw them away without telling him or asking his permission. I’d be pretty furious if my husband started getting rid of my possessions behind my back. I think most of mumsnet would call that Controlling behaviour if a woman came on and posted about it concerning her husband doing the throwing.

Iwrotethelyricstoaxlf · 23/05/2025 00:09

Are they many colours?

Does he look handsome and smart

Is he a walking work of art?

PluckyBamboo · 23/05/2025 00:14

Throw them all up in the attic for extra insulation.

Sadly I can't complain about DH's stuff or he threatens to move it into the spare bedroom which is my dedicated craft room bursting at the seams with yarn and fabric 😆.

seasonspuzzling · 23/05/2025 00:15

I thought my DH had a lot of coats and he probably has 20-30 or so

That’s a lot !

One in one out is probably the easiest here. For my DH it’s important to him, way more than me, he doesn’t really have another thing he’s spending on that much so I see it more as his hobby that gives him a lot of joy
