To think potatoes are the best carb?

Potatoes - specifically chips followed by roast potatoes and mash, jacket potatoes and hash browns
Followed by bread
Then pasta - specifically spaghetti and cannelloni, rigatoni and lasange are all my faves
Finally rice - amazing too but plain boiled just makes me sad. Rice pilaf, risotto and paella and byriani are amazing but if I had to choose based on the carb source only this would be my ranking.

If you HAD to rate those four carbs, am I being unreasonable?

I'd go potato, pasta, rice (& drop bread as I struggle to digest it).

FrodoBiggins · 19/05/2025 23:48

I mean they're all brilliant aren't they so that's my starting point. Had this very conversation with my best mate last week!

I'm a rice girl tbh. Even plain rice, as long as it's steamed and with a bit of soy sauce or laoganma mmmm... and an egg on mmmmmmm.

So I'm

  • rice
  • potatoes (especially chippy chips, honourable mention for mash)
  • bread (close to being fourth)
  • pasta (rigatoni my fave) - to reiterate, I absolutely love pasta.

WIBU to add noodles to the mix? I do love noodles and they might come in at 3rd on the above list if I'm in the mood...

I don't like pasta but otherwise you are spot on

Whiose · 19/05/2025 23:50

Potato
rice
pasta
bread

potato is king though!

murasaki · 19/05/2025 23:51

Your order is my order. But I'd sack off rice, even though I love risotto, for more spuds and bread.

weareallcats · 19/05/2025 23:53

Rice, bread, potatoes, pasta dead last.

RatOfTheHighway · 19/05/2025 23:53

Carbs are the superior food group, but I’d have to put bread in position number one (although it is a hard decision!)

cariadlet · 19/05/2025 23:59

1st bread - so many delicious kinds. Granary, wholemeal or multiseeded.
Loaves, rolls, baguettes, panini, bagels, crumpets, pittas, naan, rotis
Nothing beats a thick slice of hot toast when it's made from really, good bread (unsliced in a brown paper bag from a bakery, not sliced in a plastic bag from a supermarket)

2nd rice
3rd pasta

Potatoes a very distant 4th. I don't have them often and could easily live without them.

throwawaynametoday · 20/05/2025 00:10

Great thread.

Based on how much I love eating them in all their forms, I'd put potatoes first. BUT they also involve the most prep - mash, roasties, homemade chips, rosti, sautéed, dauphinoise etc all need significantly more effort compared to a bowl of pasta or rice, or a slice of thickly buttered bread. Even the humble jacket potato, whilst zero prep, makes you play the long game when it comes to gratification.

Holy shit I am now starving. How am I supposed to sleep thinking about buttery mashed potatoes??

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 20/05/2025 01:10

I honestly don’t know!

I like them all but none of them are amongst my favourite foods. I think maybe bread is my favourite.

I don’t like to go without any carbs, but none of them are a food I couldn’t live without.

Maybe bread, rice, pasta then potatoes

coxesorangepippin · 20/05/2025 01:21

They are definitely the most nutrient dense and filling ones, imho

Pasta is only as good as the sauce it's with

Caligirl80 · 20/05/2025 01:27

If you are discussing carbs and leaving out "cake" and "chocolate" then I am sad to say that I must register a complaint lol 😂Are truffle fries amazing? Of course. Is buttered toast absolutely sublime? For sure. Is lasagna a delight? for sure; is rice in all its forms (particularly mango sticky rice, and also beer made from rice) majestic? Indeed. But all of them fall by the wayside if someone waves a snickers bar and/or a red velvet cake in my general direction.

GoodVibesHere · 20/05/2025 05:53

Wow I'm surprised at the love for potatoes. I'd rate pasta as top.

Potatoes are so boring.

Bodonka · 20/05/2025 05:56

Pasta first. Then bread. Then potatoes, then rice. Potatoes would’ve upstaged bread but then I remembered pizza exists.

overmydeadbody · 20/05/2025 06:00

Bread is top!

Then rice

Then potatoes

I hate pasta. Kids food. It makes me sad.

ChocolateGanache · 20/05/2025 06:44

Potatoes rule 🥔👑

Nextweektoo · 20/05/2025 06:47

Rice every time

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 20/05/2025 06:48

See they're my worst carb. I would go rice, bread, pasta then pot

CharlotteSometimes1 · 20/05/2025 06:49

I adore potatoes, not bothered about pasta, rice or bread

Toomanydogwalks · 20/05/2025 06:57

Spuds rule!
then bread, rice, pasta.

Jacket potato with a crispy skin, butter and cheese: food of the gods.

karmakameleon · 20/05/2025 07:04

If we’re discussing “source” carbs, surely wheat is the source carb of choice as it is the base for bread, pasta and cake!

Jane958 · 20/05/2025 07:34

Potatoes, new, boiled in their skins with mint or baked in the oven or crushed up with a bit of butter (skins on) are my favourites. Also love potato gratin.
Not too keen on rice and loathe pasta - I think the latter are textural issues.
Not a massive fan of sweet potatoes, though, and am glad that the trend for serving sweet potato chips is dying the death as they were always limp, floppy and tasteless.

EveryDayisFriday · 20/05/2025 07:41

I completely agree. I grew up in a meat and 2 veg home. Didn't have rice or pasta until late teens. I don't like rice, it's bland and I hate the texture, although I don't mind a tinned rice pudding. Pasta is a weird chewy texture and tasteless unless covered with sauce. I don't mind a baked pasta like cannelloni or lasagne, the crispy cheese on top makes it delicious.
Potatoes are so versatile; cheesy buttery mash, salted chips, crispy jackets, creamy gratin.

Mightyhike · 20/05/2025 07:42

Potatoes
Pasta
Rice
Bread

EleanorReally · 20/05/2025 07:54

surely potatoes are coming down/have come down in popularity, due to the time they take to cook
they have in my house anyway
perhaps they are worth the wait?
i do like new potatoes as no peeling involved
dont like cous cous
