Moral quandary

There is a local sports centre near me that has a massive waiting list. I was able to join the waiting list so when I next went in (as a guest of a member) I asked the manager at the desk how long the list currently was so that I could get in idea of how long I had to wait. He told me that the list was closed due to how many were on it. I told him that I had been able to join the list. He was really surprised and asked me how I did it. I tried to show him on his computer but, it kept autofilling his details so he just said he’d look into it and email me later.

I was curious so when I got home I tried to see how I had done it and whether I had missed anything. When I clicked about I saw a button that said “become a member” so I clicked it and it basically let me set up membership and took the joining fee, set up direct debit etc. I now have a membership number etc.

So now I’m really confused as to why it’s let me do that! I clicked back and it does say in small print that the button I clicked was for people who had been sent an invitation to join. But I honestly didn’t see that, only the big button saying Become a Member.

Should I call and explain what’s happened or should I just go in and ask for my membership card?! AIBU to try my luck and see if I can get in on this loophole in their system or is that morally wrong?

Bloody hell op

just go to the gym

a “moral quandary” this is not

Teaandchocolate2222 · 16/05/2025 07:58

Also to add that they haven’t sent me a confirmation of my membership via email. I can just see I have an active membership on their portal. When my friend joined they had welcome emails etc.

Agreed, just get your card, was expecting something much more ethically challenging

Teaandchocolate2222 · 16/05/2025 07:59

Ha ha, fair enough, I worry about being caught though

Do you need welcome emails?!? You have paid and have a membership number

DDivaStar · 16/05/2025 08:04

It sounds like you've just got to the top of the list. Can you check your details on their website, maybe you typed your email in wrong .....

Teaandchocolate2222 · 16/05/2025 08:05

I’m just worried they will call me out on it as not having received an offer to join and skipping the queue

Caught? For joining on line

OP get your trainers on and get to the gym and stop procrastinating! 😂

Thiswayorthatway · 16/05/2025 08:07

You used their system on their website to join, they took your fee. You haven't done anything wrong. There are probably plenty of other people joining the same way he know nothing of any waiting list.

If they've successfully taken your money when there was no space for new members then not proceed with your membership I'd worry more about their morals.

TheNightingalesStarling · 16/05/2025 08:22

Probably why the waiting list is so long, people keep accidentally bypassing it!

What is the punishment for joining a gym by immoral actions?
Dodgeball from Medicine balls?
Made to run 1.5 miles naked?
"Give me 40 press ups,maggot?"
Getting the logo ripped off your nikes?

No more avoiding it now op

pull on your trainers and enjoy!

ConcernedOfClapham · 16/05/2025 08:30

If they have taken money from you, you perfectly entitled to utilise their services? Don’t see the issue here.

If the link should be closed you will just be refunded and turned away

You’re not ‘being caught’ - you haven’t done anything wrong!

Rosierambles · 16/05/2025 08:53

Just do an hour of burpees. You'll have paid your dues

itgetsthehoseagain · 16/05/2025 08:54

Behave as if you'd never seen the "only for invited peeps" message - which you hadn't when you joined - when you collect your card. It's the perfect loophole, and morally advantageous in that you didn't know you were exploiting it when you exploited it.
