Are some employers taking the piss now

We all keep hearing how tough the job market is. People are desperate. Well I’ve been contacted by a recruiter for a job, same level as I am doing now, £15 grand pay cut. The company has four different recruiters looking for the role and it’s been advertised for 10 weeks.

I spoke to the recruiter and there is no scope to increase the budget. They are trying to pay the salary of a decade ago. No doubt they will eventually get someone because there are some desperate people out there. But I doubt this individual will be loyal.

I think it is poor they are trying to play on peoples desperation, but also a false economy because they have lost 10 weeks (and counting) of a revenue generating role.

I keep hearing of firms struggling to find talent, when in reality they just don’t want to pay for it. Someone on this board this week was asking about going for a promotion, that didn’t come with a payrise! I know it was ever thus, but the current situation feels bonkers.

It's supply and demand. Always has been.

But if they can’t get anyone to fill the role then it isn’t supply and demand!!! That’s just bloody minded!

Well if the can’t get anyone for the role, then they’re just wasting their time.

Totally fucked employment landscape.

If there wasn't someone willing to work for this deflated wage then there soon will be.

Pay in my sector has stagnated over the last 5yrs too. I think it’s fairly universal 😬

Locutus2000 · 13/05/2025 13:49

AI is looming and NI increases have affected what companies will pay.

I have no idea what I should recommend my 15yr old DS does with his life. It was always coding but entry level positions are disappearing as the computers start to do it better than a human.

This could be a ghost job. They don't want to hire anyone, but they want their shareholder to think they are hiring people, so the shareholders think the company is doing well financially.
