Take the job or not take the job?

I applied for an internal role at my place of work. I’ve been there a good while and I’m fairly senior. I came to my current role fully qualified so not needed much in the way of training. An internal role came up that I was very interested in, it’s a step down in seniority and a small pay cut but it comes with an absolute ton of paid for training professional certification etc so I applied. I had the interview and the interviewer said well it would be great if you got the role so then you can support whoever takes on your old role. Now I’m not one to let people struggle, but I just feel it’s a bit off to expect me support my old role when I move into a new one - they wouldn’t expect an external candidate to do this. It just feels like I’m going to end up doing half of my old job while trying to get to grips with my new job and I will end up with a bigger workload and less money. WIBU to just reject the offer because they are being cheeky gits

I suppose it depends what they mean by “support”. An internal handover process for senior roles is normal where I work, and involves a period of time where the new person starts to be involved in the new role while still in their current position, and the person who is leaving does the same (obviously only if both people are moving internally).

Get them to clarify and quantify what they mean by "support".

I doubt that anyone starting a senior role is going to want the previous postholder looking over their shoulder for any period of time, anyway.

i would expect to support for a short time as a handover but they have form for recruiting the cheapest person rather than the best person for vacancies and I feel like I would never be rid of my old role because they would expect expect me to flop into it as required

Absolutely depends what they mean. A handover and light ongoing check in support sounds very reasonable to me.
