I’ve been scammed - help please!

ARGH!
I was just browsing instagram and a makeup company called IL MAKIAGE were supposedly selling this primer for a £4.95 tester. Thought it looked good, signed up to try one. Next thing I know I’ve got email confirmation of my “£46” order and i suspect it’s a recurring payment - this is not something I agreed to or that was clear on the “try our tester” page I had been on. I have emailed customer services to ask for the order to be cancelled but received an automated message that due to how fast they ship orders cancellations aren’t possible, despite me having ordered it less than 5mins before this. I paid for this via PayPal - will they help me get my money back and any future charges they may try for the “recurring orders”that I didn’t sign up for?
I’m usually so careful about reading the small print of stuff and today I wasn’t and now I’m really annoyed with myself but also really worried I’m going to be getting charged money I really don’t have for makeup I don’t want, or going to have a nightmare getting it sorted.
Does anyone have experience of this sort of thing and can please advise?

log into paypal and if they have taken any money file an item not received claim now

I have found paypal very good for this sort of thing - it does look like you've stopped the payment!

Tomikka · 10/05/2025 21:26

@Ricecakesaremyjam

That PayPal response confirms that you have stopped FUTURE payments, that might be all of the unexpected payments, but to be sure check your PayPal transactions to see if there is an initial payment

If any intial payment is more than the £4.95 you expected then dispute / cancel that as well via the PayPal process

You haven't been scammed. They're a legit company. You've just got a lot on your plate, weren't as thorough as usual and didn't read the small print. Rather than trying to cancel your order (which is part of a subscription) you need to cancel the subscription. It's straightforward if you follow the instructions.

I imagine you’ll still have to send back the tester (which is a full size product I think!) when it arrives though or you’ll be liable for the full price, as that seems to be the offer.

PayPal used to have a chat function - probably buried several levels down. I contacted them in the evening, they asked permission to call me as it'd be quicker to resolve - turns out it was someone based it Canada.

Sounds stressful. Hope you’ve sorted it.

@Ricecakesaremyjam

If you are still concerned do speak to your bank.

Goldengirl123 · 11/05/2025 17:21

I think you have been double scammed. I also fell for the good advertising for the primer . It’s crap !
