Am I going to get sick?

I just accidentally ate a slice of salami from an open pack in the fridge that is old. There was a new pack but I didn’t realise. I have no idea how long it’s been open for, it’s within date but it could have been open for a while. It didn’t look or taste quite right so I checked and found the new pack and realised what I’d done. Am I going to get ill from this?

No you won’t, you will be fine.

CatsorDogsrule · 10/05/2025 12:30

You're likely to be fine.

BlondiePortz · 10/05/2025 12:31

I don't think anyone has the power to diagnose you on a forum, but I doubt it

SundayFundayz · 10/05/2025 12:32

Kindly OP… what difference does asking make? I doubt very much you will but there isn’t anything you can do about it now, so even if someone on here tells you that you will… how will that help?

Oh god are you me? I just did the same only it wasn't salami, it was ham.

😭

Most ultra processed meats could survive a nuclear war.

I’m supposed to be going out this afternoon and if it was a definite I’d get sick I’d stay in.

No one can answer this for you.

FionnulaTheCooler · 10/05/2025 12:40

If it was still in date, its been in the fridge and doesn't look mouldy I'd say you'll be fine.

I’m glad it’s not just me!

Kindly, you are way overthinking it.

you ate some in date processed meat?

the fact there was a new packet is neither here nor there

Shouldbedoing · 10/05/2025 12:47

Salami is way safer than ham.
Far more preservatives

LBOCS2 · 10/05/2025 12:49

Literally never take any notice of how long our cold meat has been open for. If it’s not too ropey looking we eat it, and unlike ham, salami doesn’t go weird and funky smelling. I’ve never been ill from it.

This, plus salami is cured anyway so lasts longer.

And if was off it’d have tasted off, I wouldn’t give this a second thought.

zenai · 10/05/2025 12:55

Salami is full of preservatives to extend shelf life. Cooked sliced ham is similar.

I eat yogurts weeks out of date, (and other things too!). I'm still here.

ginasevern · 10/05/2025 13:00

They leave whole salami hanging from the rafters for weeks on end in Italian farmhouses. Everyone takes a slice when they want one. It's designed to last a long time in a hot country, that's the point of it. So yes, you'll be absolutely fine.

How could there be a 100% certainty of getting sick (not sure what that actually means) from eating a piece of slightly older processed meat?

Scoobyblue · 10/05/2025 13:07

you will be absolutely fine.

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 10/05/2025 13:09

What was the expiry date on the packet you ate from?

snowdrop2011 · 10/05/2025 13:17

I did this once at a friend’s house, thought it was recently opened and it wasn’t, I was very sick. It was years ago but I think the symptoms came on within hours - I was supposed to head home that day but ended up having to stay an extra night. She was horrified I’d eaten it, it had been in the fridge for some time. So you might be fine….but you might not! Good luck!

Overthebow · 10/05/2025 12:42

I’m glad it’s not just me!

I'm feeling OK so far!
Hope you also survived!

I don't know why I continued eating it when it tasted funny.

Serrina · 10/05/2025 18:48

One slice won't do any harm
