When I am President, all tailgating drivers will be permanently stopped

They'll be given opportunity to change their ways first, maybe wear an electronic tag that gives a mild electric shock if they accidentally find themselves doing 90 right up someone's bumper. But, persistent offenders will eventually have to simply drive into the sea and that'll be that.

If anyone thinks I'm unreasonable, you can vote for a different political party like Tailgaters UK, but someone needs to sort this out 🦸

OP posts:
jeaux90 · 10/05/2025 08:03

Yeah I’m a bit more interested in a party that bans porn completely and social media for under 16s.

SodOffbacktoaibu · 10/05/2025 08:05

I like it.

Though don't want the fuckers polluting the coast after driving into the sea.

I fantasize about a ray gun that comes out my car James Bond style and their car evaporates. Preferably like a cartoon where the driver is left sitting in the seat looking baffled.

I'm buying a hearse next so at least when they tailgate they're further away from me personally.

Jc2001 · 10/05/2025 08:05

I wouldn't want someone how is driving at 90mph right up my bumper to get an electric shock 😨

Middle lane drivers though. Instant ban.

Oh, and anyone with a baby on board sticker. Definite indicator of a really bad driver.

GenderFluid90 · 10/05/2025 08:45

I'm annoyed at people who crawl along 20-30 mph in a 40 zone holding everyone up on way to work.

BobLobla · 10/05/2025 09:02

I agree with our new President. Dd2 is learning to drive atm and the amount of (male) drivers that tailgate her boils my proverbial.

Annoying yes. Tailgating acceptable, no.

I get tailgated doing the speed limit so they're doing 70 sat on my bumper with no stopping distance. Scares the crap out of me. Invariably when I get out of their way, they end up being the car in front of me all the way to work. It acheives nothing other than stress. It's such a dick move.

Oh and not on a motorway. It's a dual carriageway with traffic on the inside lane going slower or joining/exiting the carriageway. It's a bloody dangerous road because of the tailgaters. Never happened when I had a bigger car.

toffeeappleturnip · 10/05/2025 09:22

I found these 2 pictures really enlightening lately - before I saw them I think I may have been a tailgater without realising 😬

Yeah it's annoying, but I usually give those drivers more room because ime they're more likely to brake suddenly or do something erratic and I don't want to be involved and will be if I'm too close.
What baffles me is when it's the car in front that's doing much less than the speed limit and I'm behind, no chance to overtake and the car behind me sits right up my arse, I mean sitting up my arse isn't going to change the behaviour of the car in front is it? And you're not going to persuade me to try and overtake it it's not safe, so it's putting both of us in danger for no reason. And we'll all end up going a bit slower because I'll back off more from the car in front more, I probably won't be able to prevent the car behind hitting me if they're too close, but I can try and stop me getting shunted into the car in front as well if I'm hit from behind.

Oh yeah I wouldn't tail gate anyone as i don't want to risk a crash. But it's bloody frustrating when people do do low under speed limit
I agree not to tailgate though

I always give like two cars lengths and seethe silently 🤣

SodOffbacktoaibu · 10/05/2025 09:28

@GenderFluid90 the ones near me tend to do almost 40 in a 60 then speed up and carry on doing 40 through all the villages with a 30 limit 🙄

Thanks @ReplacementBusService I need a good driving moan 😁

Aintnomountainlowenough · 10/05/2025 09:29

Middle lane drivers though. Instant ban.

As a traffic engineer I take issue with this one. We don’t just put in a middle lane for everyone to marvel at how nice and fancy our road is we put it in for people to drive on. If a highway has three lanes then the lanes are required to meet capacity needs or we would not bother to add the additional lanes. If there are three lanes you can be guaranteed that for the vast majority of the day at least two lanes are needed. This notion of middle lane hoggers is a hang up from badly thought out traffic rules that don’t understand why a highway would need additional lanes.

blacksax · 10/05/2025 09:29

When I am president, I'll ban the 12% of fools who have voted YABU and who think tailgating is acceptable.

SodOffbacktoaibu · 10/05/2025 09:38

@Aintnomountainlowenough I don't think I understand your point. What would you call people who sit in the middle lane for twenty +miles with no traffic to their left or traffic moving faster than them?

WibbleyPie · 10/05/2025 09:47

GenderFluid90 · 10/05/2025 09:27

I always give like two cars lengths and seethe silently 🤣

Oh yeah, the air's blue 🤣 because 'we're doing 25 miles a fucking hour in a 40!' and telling them that the accelerator pedal is the one under their right foot, muttering away to myself, but I still have enough room to stop without hitting them if I needed to, when they invariably slam their brakes on to make a turn or because there's a slight bend in the road.

LlynTegid · 10/05/2025 09:49

Wouldn't be first on my list, though I agree with the OP. First motoring lifetime bans would be for middle lane hoggers.

First decision would be that clocks are on BST year round.

BethDuttonYeHaw · 10/05/2025 09:51

Please also ban drivers who fail to use their indicators

Using the middle lane to overtake, yes good. Use the left hand lane when empty so others can overtake you and also be overtaken.

Three lanes are for capacity of the road.

Vitrolinsanity · 10/05/2025 09:56

Good start President Replacementbusservice I will add drivers that zoom down the near side motorway lane of a slip road queue and then cut in at the last minute in front of a person safely and patiently waiting.

lavenderlou · 10/05/2025 09:58

There should be especially high penalties for lorry drivers who tailgate in traffic on the motorway.

soupyspoon · 10/05/2025 09:59

Totally with you OP and I'll be your campaign manager

I fantasise when driving along, that I have a James Bond style secreted gun that operates and shoots when a car gets to a certain distance to me, just pops up and bang, then folds back down and I go on my merry way

When I am feeling more generous, Im content to fantasise that the machinery instead contains a paint gun and just splatters paint all over their windscreen, sort of Dick Dastardly stylee

jeaux90 · 10/05/2025 10:23

@JoyousEagle not always. Do you always downplay serious issues in society? You see this game plays both ways 😁

Redpeach · 10/05/2025 10:27

Tailgating causes more accidents than middle lane hoggers
