ABNORMAL SMEAR, BUT HPV NEGATIVE

Hi,I have always had negative smear results in the past. I went to the gp last year because I was getting some symptoms, despite having a normal smear result the year before. Due to a large ectropion seen, I was referred for a colposcopy and hysteroscopy. Hysteroscopy came back normal. They did a repeat smear and took biopsy of my cervix. I'm waiting for the biopsy results at the moment. The smear has came back today as abnormal. It is however HPV Negative.
Does anybody know what this means? Why is it abnormal when no hpv has been detected?

Thank you, and sorry for posting in aibu, general health rarely gets much traffic.

  1. HPV can come and go so it could have been the cause of the abnormality but HPV is no longer detectable
  2. Not all cervical abnormality’s ARE caused by HPV. Which is why I think it’s silly that unless you are HPV positive they no longer actually check for cancerous cells but it’s the NHS so they balance it on risk.

thats my understanding but I’m not a medic. Hopefully on further investigation all will be fine

Forgot to mention as well that no infections were found. This was tested at gp as precaution before referral.

Thank you. Do you think that the biopsy will show why there is cell changes? I'm assuming they'll look under microscope there. It is so confusing. I've never had abnormal before let a lone abnormal without hpv. I'm anxiously waiting for the cervical biopsy results, but know they can they can take up to 4 weeks.
