Can smell smoke all the time

But noone else can. It seemed to start after neighbours had a smelly fire/bbq last week. Since then I keep smelling it but noone else in my family can. I had something similar after Covid when I could smell cigarettes for a few weeks which was really unpleasant. But I’ve not been ill and it only seems to be when I’m at home so I think it is real! Anyone else ever had this? My husband isn’t known for his ability to smell things and neither are the teens so I’m not sure they are reliable. Can a smell get ‘stuck’ in your nose?

This may not be related at all, but I have recently had an epilepsy diagnosis, and that was something I have been asked at every appointment. Any strange smells.
Im sure that it will be something more simple though.
Maybe you have a stronger sense of smell and can still pick it up.

Boxfreshrussell · 05/05/2025 08:48

It could be sinus related but you really need to go to the GP as it can be a sign of other more complicated things to although very rare.

I would get this checked. As per pp, it can be neurological. I'm sure it's not, and I really don't want to worry you, but I've heard of some people smelling burning being the first sign of a brain tumour. Best to check.

Oh blimey. Ok that is something I will look into. I was hoping someone would say it was quite normal

It's probably covid weirdness so please don't worry yourself but definitely check.

I’ve had that on and off over the last few months, now everything I eat and drink tastes salty, just like doing a salt water gargle, even my wine tastes salty 🤷🏻‍♀️

Did you have your windows open when the neighbours had their barbecue, even if it was just for a short while? Could it be that the smoky smell is now in your soft furnishings which is why you only smell this when you're at home?

Just to update…. I went round sniffing everywhere after my son mentioned he could also smell it. Turned out there were loads of big crumbs in the toaster, burning away each time it was used 😳 having cleaned that out I can’t smell smoke any more 🤣

are you wearing something that could have smoke on it? Have you washed your hair?

menopausalmare · 08/05/2025 17:29

I had this after COVID, a phantom smell like dirty ashtrays. It's called phantosmia. It comes and goes and is worse when I'm tired. Sometimes the smell changes but is always annoying.

JohnTheRevelator · 08/05/2025 17:58

It can be caused by an upper respiratory tract infection. Or ageing.

Or you're near the Vatican 🤣

This is a known symptom of long covid, perimenopause and weight-loss jabs. The last two apply to me, and I get phantom smoke smells. Although I think perimenopause has also made me a lot more sensitive to all kinds of smells.

YouWillFindMeInTheGarden · 08/05/2025 19:28

I’ve been on mn too long

anyone remember a similiar thread where it turned out to be the plastic upholstery material stapled to the back of the op sofa…..we all went round sniffing our sofas and all found we could then smell it too!!! 😂

grafittiartist · 08/05/2025 22:19

Good news from the update! Phew!

unlikelychump · 08/05/2025 22:21

I have this from time to time, I have decided it is peri. It is particularly annoying because it sometimes is my boss having an illegal cigarette where he shouldn't which I am always on the lookout for!
