Always speaking on speaker phone

AIBU to get irritated by people who always us the loud speaker when using their phone? I have a couple friends who do it, and everyone has to be quiet when they’re on the phone. Why don’t they just use their phone like a phone and put it to their ear so we don’t all have to listen?!

This drives me absolutely crazy. Totally with you!

Lastandfirst · 03/05/2025 19:52

Drives me mad. My mum does it.
We have to listen to every conversation.
Apparently it’s because she’s deaf and can hear it better at full volume 🤦‍♀️

Carpetty · 03/05/2025 19:53

Extremely rude.

The thing is iPhones are not phone shaped - neither the ear or the mouthpiece. So not that great to hold to your head.

ThePoliteLion · 03/05/2025 19:54

It’s essentially attention seeking. Everyone listen to me having my important telephone conversation!

Do you think it's a excuse? You say 'apparently' like you don't believe it

I wear hearing aids and before I got Bluetooth hearing aids yes I always switched to loudspeaker on calls because it was very hard to hear the normal way.

Eh?!?! You do realise billions of people use a phone to have a conversation whilst not on loud speaker?

Letstheriveranswer · 03/05/2025 19:59

I'd just keep talking when they do it, maybe speak slightly louder and they might give in and use it normally (or put earbuds in)

I appreciate that there may be reasons why people might have to use speaker phone but in the case of my two friends, their hearing is fine! It’s just habit.

My in laws used to put us on speaker whenever we spoke in the phone to them which was fucking annoying because everyone in the room could hear us. We always told them to take us off speaker and eventually would hang up if they wouldn't
