phlegmy cough after having a cold

I got a cold 3 weeks ago, with the cold I had a cough and it turned into a wet cough, and ever since I’ve been left coughing. It’s started to not be every 5 mins, more like once every 10 mins and I’m worried! My phlegm has been clear/white, the cold has subsided so why hasn’t the cough!

AIBU in thinking this could be sinister?

does it sound like it’s getting better if it’s slightly less frequent and I’m not coughing as aggressively

Yes sounds like it's getting better. Colds are horrendous at the moment, seem to last forever

That sounds pretty normal for a nasty cold virus. It can take weeks for your lungs to feel normal again and it sounds as if you’re getting better.

Is this not how colds always go?

There's a very good chance it's catarrh. It drips down onto your chest whilst you are asleep and you then spend all day coughing to clear it. Try steam inhalations.

You probably need a simple over the counter mutolytic which is a fluidizing and expectorant medication. Our children's pediatrician prescribed this whenever antibiotics were not necessary . A very useful tool to speed up healing the common cold. Exomuc or Mucomyst are a few name brands that work well.

If it’s annoying enough, you may be prepared to try a home remedy, which is to crush a clove of garlic and swallow it down with a big glass of water chaser.

every day, it takes about a fortnight till it all clears up. You can feel the sinus drying up as soon as you swallow the first glove.

I’ve tried lots of medical remedies, all of which had uncomfortable side effects. The garlic really works well for me.

I buy and much lots of parsley to help with the fumes.

This is very common after a cold. There is advice on the NHS website about when to see a GP about a cough, check that for guidance.

That’s normal isn’t it? My kids cough for weeks after a cold. I had a cough so bad once after a sinusitis bout finally cleared, that my pelvic floor muscles gave up for a week. I was in agony with rib pain after too.

Everyone has been talking of the 100 day cough this winter/spring as long as you can feel it is getting better albeit slowly

Ilovelowry · 03/05/2025 18:12

I have three or four coughs a year. That's so so normal!
