Video job application verses letter application

I am currently applying for a job and the advert states to either write a 2 page statement saying why you are suitable for the job or a 5 minute video. A family member thinks that I should do a video as it would get me noticed better and to definitely not write a two page statement. The idea of doing a video is horrific! I am much more eloquent on paper and I think it would be much more difficult to try and waffle on coherently for 5 minutes on camera.

I would also assume that an applicant that decided to submit a video application had some difficulties with the written word or was possibly dyslexic?

What are everyone’s thoughts please?

I think if you feel that doing the video would be horrific, that's all the reason you need not to do it. It won't show you at your best if that's how you're feeling.

Also, the time involved in making it will be way more than five minutes. By the time you've figured out where and how to tape for the best light and background, what to wear, how to frame it, done multiple takes due to bloopers or not being sure if you're happy with what you said, it'll take as long if not longer than the written version.

Don't just turn on your camera and start recording! Plan it out. Write a script for yourself, with at least the main points you want to hit and the order to go through them. A video probably would stand out more, but only if you do it properly.

Interesting that you've been given a choice, I wonder if that's part of the "test"?

The written statement is definitely the easier option (you still need to write the video). I'd say they'll favour for the videos.

A well done video will definitely stand out more than a well written text. It’s a risk for discrimination, though.

Video job applications sound horrible! That’s my worst nightmare, tbh.

I think you should only do the video option if you’re a person who is very comfortable on video. If you’re self-conscious or nervous, I think it will probably be very noticeable and not present you in the best light.
