To Happily Swap?

Every day I check what programmes were shown on BBC1 on this day in 1982, 1983 and 1984. I know, I need to get a life, right? 🤣

I checked the other day on the 1984 date, for example - and among the programmes were

‘So You Want To Be Top’ and
‘Record Breakers’-

also on a previous day - a Sunday - in one of the years was the excellent

’That’s Life’ with Esther Rantzen and crew

Now I don’t watch or subscribe to Netflix - so missed out on the recent ‘Adolescence’ - don’t watch anything like ‘Amazon TV’ etc - although I do watch YouTube and the catch up websites like ITV X and BBC iPlayer etc

Now is there anyone, like me, who would be more than happy to swap all the internet TV subscriptions and the multiple digital channels for the return of the above mentioned programmes and things like

Winner Takes All
Terry and June ?

I think you’ve got too much time on your hands if you’re checking 40 odd year old schedules every day!
Perhaps subscribe to the internet streaming services so you can watch them?

I'm a bit like you, I don't have Sky or netflix or Amazon.

However, whilst I have been nostalgic about bygone TV, a few channels like that's TV and talking pictures have shown things I once loved.

Honestly, actually watching them is very different to my misty memory.

I loved the comedies, Terry and June, Duty Free, Hi de Hi, It ain't half hot mum. Watching them back now, I can only presume it was because we only had 3 channels. So much of the 'comedy' was innuendos of the tittering about breasts type, and childish misunderstandings. I really shouldn't have watched 'Are you being served' again, that ruined a happy memory.

In reality, there was bugger all on. Evening TV in the 80s seemed to be endless Terry Wogan.

There were some great dramas. The original All Creatures Great and Small hasn't lost any of its charm. But there was a lot of dross peppered with the odd standout.

That’s nuts. Do you also want ‘Love thy neighbour’ back with its awful racism? This seems like a load of golden age thinking to me.

‘Ain’t half hot mum’ you good with blackface then??? Dear me.

There is something to be said for the lack of choice. It’s like the shampoo quote - all we need is a cheap one if you’ve not got much money to spare, a middling one if you’re doing okay, and an expensive one if you’re rich or are buying a birthday present. Simpler days with fewer choices.

No, not now. That was on when I was about 6. I didn't really understand much about that then. I think it's godawful watching it as an an adult.

Love thy neighbour ended in 1976. Record Breakers was still on until 2001.
I don't know about OP but I was born in 1974. So LTN was before my time, but Record Breakers very much wasn't.
