My DD is in year 5. Both myself and DH are qualified teachers although DH works as a tutor (mainly evenings and weekends). Our DD is autistic and massively struggling at school. Mainly due to the social side although finding everything really hard. Academically she is ok but the misery of going to school is starting to affect her.
We could logistically home school as we are like passing ships with our different hours and so could theoretically home school.
I think we should home school her but it’s such a big decision.
Has anyone made this change for similar reasons? How has it gone?

So really dh would look after her 8am to 6pm in the daytime term-time and you would take over in the evenings/weekends/holidays?

how would that work with your dh’s current workload? It sounds like there may be some time from 3.30 to 6pm when dd is home and your dh is tutoring.

what would the long term plan be - find a secondary school that meets DD’s needs? Is it possible?

Yes, but when my kid was early teens. Her grades didn’t improve but the improvements in her mental health was amazing. Sadly I think she began associating any kind of schoolwork with anxiety so she shuts down.

British schools are so abusive, I would never subject my child to them.

All of them? Interesting.

So glad you shared this ridiculously uninformed opinion.

I can't think what anyone would've done without it.

Yes I would and I did. I have more than one child though which in some ways is easier, in some harder. There are loads of ASD kids who are home educated and it’s clear that being free from school structures and restrictions is incredibly liberating, and they can find friendships in home ed groups as well.

They can go in to school later on if that is what you want.
