Abestos van parked outside my garden gate

The car park is empty besides one other car and they have chosen to park outside my gate, where I am growing vegetables and salad. the door is facing my garden and it’s a windy day. I don’t want abestos particles flying my way. Can I phone the council and get them to shift it

Shift it where? Somewhere far away from the place they are probably collecting the asbestos from? This is bonkers.

frozendaisy · 25/04/2025 10:17

Why don't you talk to them directly first?

TheCountofMountingCrispBags · 25/04/2025 10:18

The van is made of asbestos? Wow!

TheNightingalesStarling · 25/04/2025 10:19

Asbestos is wrapped up in situ before being moved.

vodkaredbullgirl · 25/04/2025 10:20

It's a van, it's not carrying asbestos.

It is. The door facing my garden says “dirty end” and has other warning labels. The side says “abestos” in great big letters.

Presumably because your gate is nearest space to where they are working

Or do you want them to have to carry it further?

crumblingschools · 25/04/2025 10:24

Do you not think the asbestos will be stored/handled carefully?

It actually isn’t. They could have parked closer

Asbestos removal is highly specialist. There will not be particles flying anywhere. It may not even be removal at this stage. If a contractor even suspects asbestos they have to stop work, seal everything off and call in a specialist.

This will be for emergency workers to be aware in case the van is involved in an accident etc. Undisturbed asbestos doesn't pose a hazard and professionals are trained how to handle it safely so it poses no threat to themselves or the general public.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 25/04/2025 10:32

Any asbestos removal is VERY regulated (at least it is if it's official, and they wouldn't use a marked van if it wasn't). There are tight regulations about handling and moving it, it has to be packaged so no particles can come into contact with anyone not wearing protective clothing. They don't just fling it about and throw it in the back of the van (if it's official removal).

Cheapskates and those who don't care about health and safety can and do move the stuff about without protective clothing/handling, but they wouldn't bother to use a van marked Asbestos, they'd sling it in the back of a transit. And you wouldn't even know.

GasPanic · 25/04/2025 10:34

How do asbestos fibres get into vegetables and salad ?

BobbyBiscuits · 25/04/2025 10:36

If there's a phone number or whatever on there you could call it? Or just ask the driver? But they'll explain to you that it's not hazardous as they use controlled ways of storing it.

IsItBeesThoughLooshkin · 25/04/2025 10:39

I understand your concerns but I don’t think ingesting asbestos fibres is dangerous, only breathing them in.

OneTC · 25/04/2025 10:39

There's a lot of misplaced confidence in the asbestos removal industry ITT

Comefromaway · 25/04/2025 10:40

I work for a construction company. I've seen the process when we suspect or come across asbestos.

Pluvia · 25/04/2025 11:00

I had to have some asbestos removed from the property I bought. Every piece of it was coated in foam and individually wrapped so that no particles could fly off. I think you're being wildly over-sensitive.

MammaFifi · 25/04/2025 11:06

Jeez chill out... that isn't carrying asbestos. It will be their shower/welfare. They go in the dirty end remove and dispose of their protective wear, then move along to the next section to shower and then move along and put on clean clothes... and exit out the clean end...
