Punishment By Suprise AIBU?

As a family we’d holiday in very unmumsnetty package holidays aboard -all
inclusive - you know the drill !!

On one of these holidays just 2 days before went home, when I was 10 years old so had a whole year in primary yet to go, iyswim, I came up to the room at around 6pm ish (I guess) to do the usual prep for dinner - bath etc … and found my drunk mum sat bolt upright in bed shouting awful abuse at me - accusing me of ruining her life and ordering me out to the balcony for daring to cry! I was so shocked that my childhood was never quite the same again.

Id done nothing to cause this, and my mum after she’d sobered up never apologised just expected things to carry on as if it never happened.

So this is the Punishment By Surprise treatment?

AIBU to have felt traumatised by this?

I don’t know what you mean by punishment by surprise but I think it sounds hugely traumatic and I’m sorry you went through that. I hope you’re finding peace and healing in your life now ♥️

I’m sorry please can you explain punishment by surprise?

Thank you - I really appreciate your kind words .

I suppose by punishment by surprise- I meant an unsuspecting child being blindsided by a furious drink fuelled parent

I’m sorry OP but have you posted this before? I’ve read it here previously. If not then you’re not alone. If so, maybe therapy would help?

Mosaic123 · 22/04/2025 16:50

Maybe it wasn't alcohol induced but something else? Drugs?

Such an awful experience for you whatever the reason.

SummerIce · 22/04/2025 16:50

I’m pretty sure I have read about this same incident before. You are obviously quite traumatised by it so I strongly recommend you speak to a therapist to unpick that trauma.
