Perimenopause- anxiety and nightmares

LadyGillingham · 20/04/2025 17:40

So, this has been a regular thing for the last few months. A few days before my periods start, i have intense anxiety in my sleep, mainly triggered by nightmates.

Has anyone experienced this? Greatly appreciate any advice on how to cope.

Yup. Vivid dreams, racing heart rate, fuzzy hands and feet. Had it for 5 years. Still regular as clockwork, so no end in sight. Bloody annoying.

WhySoManySocks · 20/04/2025 18:01

Yes. Place marking in hope of a solution.

I am 44 and during PMS I wake up feeling dreadful and terrified and hating myself. And I get massively anxious about anything unknown and even stuff which I used to do all the time.

Endofyear · 20/04/2025 22:42

Have you tried CBD drinks or gummies? They're good for anxiety and sleep issues.

LadyGillingham · 20/04/2025 22:44

Has anyone found relief with natural remedies? Like calming teas, or meditation etc ?

Cutting out wine has reduced this for me, not eradicated but definitely reduced

I often feel v anxious on waking. Do this thing now where I try to flood my brain with thoughts about what I like about myself/ grateful for. Alleviates the panic a bit.

What do you mean by fuzzy hands and feet? I get tingling in my fingertips and my right big toe. Been checked out by neurologist and they say it's anxiety. Wondering if it's peri?

Bigpaintinglittlepainting · 20/04/2025 22:49

High dose of CBD has helped and totally get rid of my peri anxiety, I'm on 3000mg

Alfiemoon1 · 20/04/2025 23:57

Yes I range from awful insomnia to sleeping and having awful dreams before perimenopause i never remembered my dreams but now I have awful dreams/ thoughts ? I am unsure if I am asleep or not I am however going through a tough time at moment along with the joys of perimenopause

Progesterone pessaries sorted this out for me. I initially got given progesterone to take orally along with oestrogen gel and one of those things sent me in a terrible downward spiral. But the local progesterone is blessed relief! It’s trial and error but recommend a really well informed menopause clinics advice as it’s life changing - I have been suffering for years needlessly

Happytweet · 21/04/2025 00:07

Yes! Haven’t found the answer yet, drink makes it worse. Watching with interest.

Squarestones · 21/04/2025 00:11

Reducing alcohol also helped me, I noticed it most after drinking white wines/prosecco. Cut those out and all other stuff only one drink early eve. Def helped with some anxiety but I still get the pre-menstrual version of it.

I also find writing a diary helps, it can remind me that this is hormones talking. And it can help me process the anxious thoughts day or night. Often find myself doing yoga at3am as well

Transdermal HRT is natural and body identical. .

Genevieva · 21/04/2025 09:29

Exactly that. Only at night.

Sorry c- replied without including you.

Exactly that.

BigDahliaFan · 21/04/2025 09:34

Hrt sorted it for me…and cut down drinking.

That's reassuring, thanks. The GP looked at me like I had two heads when I suggested it.

Foxgloverr · 21/04/2025 09:37

I can't go on HRT as had breast cancer but have definitely noticed its worse after a couple of glasses of wine.

Goballistic · 21/04/2025 09:37

Yes and found that progesterone in hrt made things worse. I came off hrt about 6 weeks ago and started taking menopase along with a good multi vitamin and feel a lot more normal

My GP has a special interest in women’s health and says it is a typical symptom.

LadyGillingham · 21/04/2025 13:44

I gave up alcohol 4 years ago (for other reasons) - I was wondering if I should start taking some wine to relax! Glad I asked 😳

Tension tamer is quite good as a natural tea. I am taking ashwaghanda and another mixed mushroom supplement. They help a bit but I still have good and bad days. At the moment I am having a really really bad week with anxiety as I have something big coming up that will last 2 weeks, hence me searching on mumsnet for women who are suffering also and stumbling across your post. I just want to hideaway from everyone and cry! It’s so rubbish isn’t it?
