Unwanted and unrequested emails

Can anyone help me please. Is it possible to put my email address on a sex site without using my iPad? I suspect an old acquaintance has done this as today a sex line email turned up with her name and the name “Madeline” who I have never heard of and the offer to contact “Madeline” via an email address. I have been receiving up to 150 emails in a day, I immediately block and send to bin but all that happens is the girl changes her name and is back the next day, I recognise them from the colour of what they are “nearly” wearing. No I don’t read them as I have been told not too on the hope they give up but they don’t. I have chatted to friends and none of them know what to do, I understand basic things on my iPad but not this, I am really fed up and want it to stop.

Anyone can use your e-mail address to sign you up to receive spam e-mails or to add you to a mailing list.

Your email address is not tied to a single device so yes it's possible for someone else to sign you up to a mailing list. However, these days there are generally more safeguards in place so you will often only be signed up to a mailing list after the company Sends a link to your email address which you have to click on to confirm that it's really you. This is designed to prevent just the scenario that you suspect here of someone signing you up without your knowledge.

I'm not entirely clear why you particularly suspect an old acquaintance though? Does their name or email appear somewhere? It's actually far more likely that their account has been hacked and is now being used to send out these unwanted emails.

This is just spam email, have you not had to deal with any before now?

Hello AlohaRose, I know this “acquaintance” does use dating lines, and when my husband died she wanted to take my photo and put me on a dating line (she was told no) and yes her name was on the top of this email along with a short email sent to me by my cousin she has had no problems YET.

Never had to deal with this problem before.

Contact the website and tell them some one is wrongly using your email address and to remove it from their database.

I'm confused by this. What's your cousin got to do with it?

Also on the top of this email was a one line email commenting on a photo sent by my ex-acquaintance. Sorry I wasn’t very clear, put it down to old age.

That wasn't quite what I expected when I clicked on the thread. As per pp contact the company it sounds really irritating.

As this was posted under AIBU I feel like I'm able to give this opinion...
YABU and are stupid to not understand the basics of email.
If you're going to use it, learn it. Age is no excuse, emails have been a thing since I believe the 70s

If the account is tied to your email, you should just be able to request a password reset, log in and deactivate/delete the whole account. If this doesn't work, you can mark any emails from that site as spam/block them.

I'm unsure of your legal position if someone has posted your image and details to a potentially adult site although I imagine you'd be able to file a report and hopefully someone with more knowledge about this may come along and offer advice.
