Different tastes in music

DH likes classic rock- Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Bob Dylan etc.

I like heavier rock- Korn and Opeth are favourites. And I also like pop music- BSB, Taylor Swift, Shania Twain etc.

When I drive the kids anywhere (which is frequent), we listen to my music. They have started to request stuff- DS likes Korn, DD likes ‘girl rock’ (Lacuna Coil).

However, when DH is in the car it is his music
or nothing. I find this very inflexible.

We have a long journey coming up. WIBU to put on my music? IMO 3 out of 4 will be happy.

Could you make a playlist with a bit of everything and add in stuff you both really like. If its a long journey you'll get through a lot.

Or even find a fun podcast for part of it thats good for all ages in the car? There is so much available on there I've found some really cool stuff.

RobertaFirmino · 17/04/2025 22:02

Could you not just put Absolute Classic Rock on? They play the lot.

In the words of Dean Winchester - driver picks the music, shotgun shuts his cakehole. But then I rarely have a passenger in my car. For the sake of family harmony though, you should have a selection of music that covers all tastes.

Oh I think I’m this kind of asshole; if it’s my car and I’m driving it’s Opeth etc all the way 🤘

Your DH has great taste!!

MereNoelle · 17/04/2025 22:19

We all have our own playlist and alternate between them on long journeys.

Listen to an audio book instead.

I can’t think of many audiobooks that I, my husband and my 3 children (11, 9 and 6) would all enjoy on a long journey.

oviraptor21 · 17/04/2025 23:19

When I'm driving it's my music.
When DH is driving it's his music.
If it's a long journey we try to be considerate to the other's tastes.

Take turns? Seems bloody obvious to me.

Obvious to most I’d imagine, but as the OP says her DH makes them listen to his music when he’s in the car, so it must not be obvious to him.

ImustLearn2Cook · 17/04/2025 23:28

Driver has to be able to concentrate on driving so they pick the music or whether or not to play music at all.

ImustLearn2Cook · 17/04/2025 23:29

If it is a long journey won’t you be taking turns driving?

The OP said that her DH chooses the music whenever he’s in the car, not just when he’s driving.
