Was walking along the street and a man said hello to me and my daughter age 5. Then we walked forward a bit and my daughter stopped and looked behind at him. I turned back around and noticed him winking at my daughter and when he saw me catch him he looked a bit sheepish

That wouldn’t bother me. I was waving bye bye to a tot the other day, then realised her parents wouldn’t have seen her smile wave and chatter at me first.

I think it depends on the age of the man. Loads of men in my grandads generation would stick their tongue out or wink or pull faces at us when we were kids. More unusual for a younger guy to do it. Bit weird, but I wouldn't automatically jump to the guy being a weirdo if it was just one wink.

I often wink and smile at small children. It is a common thing for older people to do. But good to be wary. As long as it doesn’t go any further and he just walks on without any further engagement, he’ll just be being nice.

My Dad used to make a noise like Donald Duck 😂 which might be better or worse than winking , who knows

Though he did make a Donald Duck " hello " to one of my guinea- pigs who was free ranging across the floor . Guinea stopped and glared at him a full 30 seconds with a ""what the Jeff" look on his face !
