Has anyone else got a child who doesn’t need much sleep?

My 6 year old DS is up at between 5:30 and 6am everyday.
It doesn’t matter what we do during the day, whether he’s been at school, swimming, lots of exercise.
It’s now 9:35pm and he’s still awake - I can hear him moving around in his bedroom. He was up at 6am today and we’ve been on the go all day. Bike riding, been to a party, visited a friend’s house for a play date…
I know it’s the school holidays, but he’s like this all the time. He never ever seems tired, doesn’t yawn all the time, never falls asleep in the car, just never seems tired. Even after such early starts and late nights.

I had one. He's 16 now. Still up at 8am latest daily on school holiday. His babyhood nearly broke me, especially as my first was and still is a great sleeper. But that's the way they are.

I also don't need much sleep and would wander my parents house at night as a child because I didn't want to be alone and everyone was asleep. I'd sit in their rooms for company. They didn't appreciate finding me there if they woke mind you.

My ds will go to bed and read a d lights out by midnight but it's rare he seems tired or ever naps during the day.

Didn't Margaret Thatcher only need 5 hours a night?

Yes, both of mine are like this. I’ve given up and have later bedtimes to avoid prolonged bedtimes.

Both manage fine at school etc.

Yes! My 6 year old was up at 4am yesterday morning for a flight, she still didn’t go to sleep until 9:30pm and we spent 4 hours trekking around waterfalls! Plus we’re an hour behind so our body clock was thinking 10:30pm. She still woke up at 6am this morning 🙈

My just turned 5 year old. Wakes between 5:30am and 6am, doesn’t stop all day, needs so much physical and mental stimulation, then goes to sleep at 8:30pm ish earliest. Has always been like this.

my niece is exactly like this it's exhausting and it's not my child will often easily stay up until 10 then be awake 530 next morning after a full day of school and after school activities she is nearly 7 always been like it still wakes at night sometimes and until she was 5 never slept through the night
She is very bright though so I'm wondering if that's why? suffers from night terrors bad dreams et etc also doesn't like sleeping o her own in her own bed!!

Seawolves · 15/04/2025 22:44

Mine wakes around 4.30 - 5am most days but will lay quietly in bed, about once a week he wakes before midnight and is awake until around 9am the next day. He does have a diagnosis that has disordered sleep as part of the signs and symptoms though.

Loop3x5 · 15/04/2025 22:54

Yep, is now 16 and still doesn't need much - just stays up much later these days rather than get up at an ungodly hour.

I've always been someone who doesn't need much sleep, used to drive my parents mad when I was little. I usually get 5-6 hours a night and function pretty well on that. I'm wide awake now watching tv while DH is fast asleep. I usually go to sleep about 1am and wake around 7am. I think some people just need more sleep than others

Glowingwords · 15/04/2025 23:22

Yes dd was like this. She's recently started lying in until 8 am. Age 20. She used to read.

WineIsMyMainVice · 15/04/2025 23:28

If it’s any consolation my DD used to be like this. She is now 12. Monday was the first day of the Easter holidays - she slept for FIFTEEN hours straight!!! 9pm to 12 noon!!!!
One minute you can’t get them to sleep, the next you can’t get them out of bed!!
All I mean is, hang on in there op. Hope it improves for you soon x

Mylegishangingoff · 15/04/2025 23:31

My ds was like this. Just never seemed to need much sleep. He is 18 now and still always up at the crack of dawn. He never went through the sleep half of the day teenager phase. My dd always loved sleeping, now as teenager I have to nearly drag her out of bed for school, she'll sleep til 1 at weekends if left to it!

CarpetKnees · 15/04/2025 23:40

One of mine was.

Was 3 before she ever went down before 11pm. Missed the teen phase of lying in, completely.
Still (as a young adult) doesn't need much sleep.

LambriniBobInIsleworthISeesYa · 16/04/2025 10:39

Yes, my eldest. Like it literally from birth. She’s now 10 and only needs about six hours sleep a night. Functions fine at school, isn’t tired, just doesn’t need much sleep. Spends a lot of the evening/night reading.
