Car I got 3 months ago going into neutral

Hi all, I could really use some advice.

I bought a used car three months ago from a dealer. Recently, the car has started slipping into neutral while I’m driving - it’s intermittent but obviously a serious safety concern.

I’ve emailed the dealer, and after some back and forth, they’ve agreed to look at the car. But they’ve said it could take months because they need to drive it themselves until the fault happens. This could take an indefinite amount of time they say. They’ve not offered a courtesy car or any support during this time, and I can’t afford to hire one. If they find no fault in their driving then they will give it back to me.

I’ve also had an independent diagnostic check done at their request but it came back clear though the issue still happens. The dealer is saying it’s basically my word against theirs and they say I have no legal standing.

I don’t like confrontation and don’t feel confident speaking on the phone or in person. I just want to resolve this fairly. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, I understand I should be entitled to a repair without significant inconvenience and failing that, a partial refund.

AIBU that them keeping the car indefinitely is crazy and they should offer to replace or refund?

When you say intermittent, do you mean every 30 seconds, or every 3 months?
