To think most men would cheat if they could get away with it?

It’s not cynicism, it’s realism.

No some do just like some women do. Cheating isn't solely confined to men, probably just more get caught or decide to leave.

Rosebushes · 14/04/2025 14:17

No, and what’s with all these posts

Dotjones · 14/04/2025 14:29

No I don't think most men would cheat. The ones who are willing to cheat don't really care about what they are throwing away if they are caught.

It's like how people don't commit crime solely because they fear the consequences of getting caught. I don't think I'd randomly slaughter a stranger just because Keir Starmer legalised killing. It's just not me.

Thepeopleversuswork · 14/04/2025 14:52

Not all, don’t know about most but a lot more than ww think. Some people just aren’t constitutional cheaters. But I certainly think more would cheat their partners will acknowledge.

Anyone who blithely asserts that their husband or partner would “never” cheat is not being honest with themselves.

MsCactus · 14/04/2025 14:54

Men and women cheat in equal amounts - and men and women are faithful in equal amounts. It's more about a person's personality than it is about their sex.

Tbh if I'm being 100% honest I would probably cheat if I knew there was no way anyone would ever know or find out - and I'm a woman

JoyousEagle · 14/04/2025 15:03

I think a lot of people with crappy husbands like to believe that all/most men are like that, whether it’s cheating, or something like not doing any parenting, or treating their wives like some sort of skivvy.

I wouldn’t say my DH would never cheat, I’d never make a blanket statement about anyone else really. And tbh I wouldn’t state categorically that I wouldn’t cheat either.

Meadowfinch · 14/04/2025 15:04

Not all of them obviously, but most.

I used to run professional conferences in the UK & abroad. Having watched thousands of attendees, away from their families, I'd say 60% of men will take an opportunity and think what goes on on-tour stays on-tour. About 20% will pay for sex and a minority behave themselves.

Of course, I have no idea what their wives and girlfriends are doing while their male partners are away. Maybe they are having fun with the bloke next door.

Either way, it was a glimpse of reality.😕

Ronsealit · 14/04/2025 15:05

Maybe. But so would lots of women, we’re all human.

No some do just like some women do. Cheating isn't solely confined to men, probably just more get caught or decide to leave.

But it’s not an equal thing because it’s an established fact that men tend to have more dark triad traits than women. They also tend to more easily separate love and sex. It’s a generalisation but it is true, in general.

And yes, I do think that a lot of men would cheat if they were guaranteed never to face any consequences.

Oblomov25 · 14/04/2025 15:07

We get this thread on mn al the time. Yawn, boring.

No. I wouldn't. I have morals and I know it destroys any relationship because of a lack of trust.

So anyone. Man or woman who holds similar views wouldn't either.

so no, I don't think most men/ all men would.

Pinkmagic1 · 14/04/2025 15:08

Yes, I think the vast majority would given the opportunity.
Yes, both men and women cheat, but I would say a much higher percentage of men than women would. Sexually they are wired up differently.

Edited

Who are they having sex with ?
Presumably not all the women are single either?

Lyannaa · 14/04/2025 15:12

I think that what people also miss in these discussions, where they want to fiercely claim that we have equality (we don’t) is that men are raised by society to believe that their wants and needs are the most important. A lot of them have an entitled attitude.

By contrast, women have been raised to be people pleasers and not do ‘unladylike’ things like cheat.

Hopefully these stereotypes will change but they’ll only change if people change how they parent.

It is only men on dating websites who seem to think that they can date much younger women than they are who are much better looking than they are or have more money than they do. They are unrealistic and will expect women to have a high standard of appearance, whilst they themselves are going bald, losing their looks and getting a beer belly.

Well in that case most women would cheat too if they could get away with it.

Men, more so than women, are more likely to do all manner of 'bad' things if they think there are no consequences. Rhythm 0 and Gisele Pelicot being just two examples.

Generally speaking, men take more risks without thinking through the fallout (even on themselves!) first, women are conditioned to think about the impact on others before themselves. That's not to say all men cheat or women never cheat, but I think it's fair to say if there was a Black Mirror or the Purge style 24 hours where 100 men and women could do what they wanted without ever getting caught, most of the men would cheat at a minimum, even if they wouldn't quite stretch to shocking criminal violence or whatever.

Disclaimer: I've never been cheated on in a serious relationship (afaik!) so this isn't bitterness talking - I don't think!

HollyBerryz · 14/04/2025 15:19

I think lots more people would cheat if it was guaranteed they'd never get caught. I'm cynical, unfortunately.

Quiceinalifetime · 14/04/2025 15:21

What are your reasons for believing this @YourKhakiWasp?

Lascivious · 14/04/2025 15:24

Misery really loves company on mumsnet 😂

My husband wouldn’t cheat because he’s happily married. And a decent person.

Careful. You’ll be accused of being a naive twit whose husband secretly wants to have sex with literally any woman around.

BrassedOffTiggy · 14/04/2025 15:29

I work in IT sales and regularly attend off site meetings and conferences. It's much better now but in the late 90's/early 00's, I would say that around 80% of my colleagues were up to no good. It was rarer to find a faithful man than not, unfortunately. The women were almost as bad and affairs around the office were rife. I would imagine that partners at home would say 'my husband/wife would never cheat' but my eyebrows were raised regularly at the most unlikely culprit.
I see the younger generation coming through and on the whole they seem more respectful and less likely to go out and drink/party and misbehave which is a much more wholesome environment.
