Inflammation and infection on blood test

Hi I've had a phone call from the doctor and he's mentioned that in 6 weeks I need to retake a blood test. Because of inflammation and infection. I've not had any illness like cough, a cold or a temperature, or water infection. I did have a mouth ulcer a few days before the test. Could the mouth ulcer have caused inflammation and infection in a blood test result. The doctors receptionist also mention plasma levels.

I doubt it but I’m not a doctor. Was it an infected ulcer? Why did you have the blood test?

FairyPoppins · 14/04/2025 07:46

A couple of years ago I had a blood test that showed low platelets. The GP asked if I'd had any serious infection or illness - I hadn't.
In the end it looked like I was low on iron.i was given iron tablets, and gradually my platelets increased back to normal levels

I had the blood test because I've not had a period for 4 years. Although for the past 3 months my period has come back. So the blood test was to check my hormones.

No the ulcer wasn't infected just really sore for a few days.

Fairypoppins could be low iron then hopefully.

Try not to worry. They’ve asked for a repeat in 6 weeks. If they were very concerned you’d know. How were the hormones?

FairyPoppins · 14/04/2025 07:51

It could be, or something totally unrelated. If you have access to your notes you'll be able to see which bits of the blood test are outside the normal range - then you can ask the GP what they would recommend to get things back on track

NimbleBee · 14/04/2025 07:51

Greengreyblue he said all hormones seemed OK. And that he will refer me to a gynaecology. To talk to them.

Well at least the hormones look ok. It may well be that the next blood test is fine. Yes check the actual levels of iron etc as they’re often too low and still pass as ok. Something I’ve learned on Mumsnet. Good luck.

@NimbleBee This is an old-ish post now but I feel worried for you
If you have had bleeding 4 years after no periods then your GP should refer you for urgent investigations, starting with a scan. The timeline should be an appt within 2 weeks of seeing your GP.

Have you got that appt date yet?

Are you post-menopausal?
