I've never "got" these.

OP posts:
MiddleAgedDread · 13/04/2025 19:23

That’s a pretty crap example but post box toppers are cute and fun and a rare sign of some community spirit these days.

ForZanyAquaViewer · 13/04/2025 19:24

I think they’re adorable. What don’t you get, OP?

Needmorelego · 13/04/2025 19:25

People knit or crochet toppers for postboxes.
That's it.
And why not?
I am jealous of some of the skills involved.

XenoBitch · 13/04/2025 19:26

I like them. They make me smile.

DuckieDodgyHedgyPiggy · 13/04/2025 19:30

I think they're incredibly skillful, delightful and often witty. They're a rare example of women's street art (yes, of course some men crochet but I know my local group is all women). If a Banksy is worth millions then these should be too.

NeedAnyHelpWithThatPaperBag · 13/04/2025 19:32

Guerrilla knitting. What's not to like 😃

ItGhoul · 13/04/2025 19:34

I appreciate that a lot of skill goes into making them but for some reason, textiles outdoors getting wet and grubby makes me feel a bit repulsed and slightly depressed. I don’t know why.

I can understand that. They don't age that well.

They are replaced quite regularly round my way.
Apparently the wool is frequently washed and re used.

onlyconnect · 13/04/2025 19:37

I just love the fact that someone’s bothered to make them. And near me they get left alone too.

Dearg · 13/04/2025 19:41

I am in awe of the talent.

I’m sure it is, but when I still find them bleak when I walk past one in the rain. Decorative knitting/crochet/whatever this is just doesn’t belong outdoors, for me.

I don’t have any hygiene concerns, it just makes my skin go crawly. I get the same feeling when I see a lost item of clothing on the pavement getting wet and manky.

Kangarude · 13/04/2025 19:47

That’s not a particularly great example OP 😂
There are some really beautiful themed ones near me that show amazing talent. They make me smile when I see them

Sunseed · 13/04/2025 19:48

A town near me has a fabulous group of Toppers. They created a Pokemon hunt, and are core to decorating the town centre for a summer festival.

DancingDucks · 13/04/2025 19:52

Do you have to 'get' them?

Ihad2Strokes · 13/04/2025 19:54

It's okay, you don't have to 'get' it.

Some people enjoy making them and making others smile. It's actually not a difficult concept to understand though.

Before I had the stroke, I used to knit and crochet, but far far far too slowly to make these. I'm not terribly fond of the one you have linked to, but there are some amazing ones and if I had put that much time and effort into knitting or crocheting them, they would be going inside someone's home to be looked after carefully or played with not put outside in all weathers!!

However, some people knit or crochet much more quickly and get real pleasure out of displaying their projects around the local community making other people smile and I am grateful to them.

DinaofCloud9 · 13/04/2025 19:55

What do you mean by you don't get it?

What is there to "get"?

JoyousEagle · 13/04/2025 19:56

What’s to get? It’s just a bit of whimsy.

Ener · 13/04/2025 19:58

The people who do our local ones are so skilled. I love them.

JackieDaytonaLuckyBrews · 13/04/2025 20:00

Someone does this in our local town and their skill is amazing. They look lovely and presumably make people smile (I do anyway). It's just a bit of fun, there's not much to "get" really.

LucyMonth · 13/04/2025 20:00

I think it’s what’s known as a bit of fun OP. Not really much to “get”.

Fissk · 13/04/2025 20:02

I don't get them either. They're always for ridiculous themes or 'occasions', very tacky, usually quite grubby and just at my height to be in my face when I want to use the post box.

I wouldn't inflict my own crappy attempts at crafting on the world, and there's a vendetta on our street against kids chalking on the pavement, but theses are apparently lovely.

PoorUncleBarry · 13/04/2025 20:03

There was a bit of kerfuffle on FB this week as two grown men were spotted getting out of a car and stealing the new Easter topper for the post box. They were threatened to be named and shamed so the next day it came back 😁

Yellowaveo59 · 13/04/2025 20:11

A lovely example of a topper

Looking at that makes me super happy. I imagine that it brought loads of joy to whoever made it and to the people who walk past it.

Lovely.
