What does it mean to sometimes smoke?

I am in my 20’s and on a dating app. I would say around people may age about half of the profiles say they don’t smoke and the other half say they sometimes smokes. There’s only a minority of profiles that they they smoke.

What is the difference between saying you smoke and that you sometimes smokes?

No difference to me, they are a smoker. End of.

Usually that sort of answer means they will only smoke socially or when stressed.

I would assume either casual smokers when out drinking but not on a typical day or they sometimes smoke weed and not cigarettes.

I vape (quit my 30 a day cig habit years ago) but I would say I sometimes smoke
As in I will smoke on a night out but that’s rare. I can go years without one but on Friday I wanted one, that was the first in 3 years
I guess I see it as if someone offered them a cig they would have it but they don’t smoke every day/week/month

In my day this was someone who didn't smoke but would scab fags off other people to fit in when they were pissed.

TheBuffetInspector · 13/04/2025 12:22

I think they don't want to admit they smoke for fear of putting people off.

I smoked for over 30 years. I've been without a rollie or fag for 3 months now. I don't smoke!

My brother and my Mum would nick a rollie from me, or buy 'proper' cigarettes if they'd had a drink. They class themselves as non smokers.

I honestly think the 'sometimes' means yes, I smoke.

Sugarfish · 13/04/2025 12:28

Maybe they smoke when they drink. I suppose I would class myself as an occasional smoker. I mainly vape now but I will have the odd cigarette on a night out although that’s getting rarer now. I’ve probably smoked about 3 cigarettes this year.

Doesn't buy cigarettes.

I once worked a woman that only smoked whilst away on holiday.
Seemed a really strange thing to do.

Dwappy · 13/04/2025 14:24

I had a friend who classed herself as “pretty much” a non smoker. What she meant was she didn’t buy them. She smoked mine. She could smoke 10-20 on a night (or day) out. But she never bought any because “she didn’t really smoke”.
We once went on holiday and I bought 200 duty free on the way there. She honestly smoked more of them than me. But if anyone asked if she smoked she would say “No. Just the odd one when out.” She actually got really annoyed when I quit and used to ask if I could “just bring some just in case” on nights out!

I quit smoking about 3 years ago and quite vaping 2 years ago. In the first year or so I still classed myself as a smoker because I hadn't ruled out the possibility of having a cheeky cig on a night out. Now however I'd say I'm firmly a non smoker as I haven't touched one or had any urges for one in years. My husband and close friends all still smoke so I always have the opportunity.

Simonjt · 13/04/2025 15:23

Social smokers maybe? I smoke, I wouldn’t class my husband has a smoker, but maybe 3-4 times a year he’ll smoke on a night out.
