Do you consider this to be doing very well?

Age 38, 90k salary a year with bonus of circa 10k on top, own home with small (100k mortgage) left.

I made a comment to my parents that my sibling was doing extremely well and I couldn’t even compete with what she provides for her DD, to be told that after tax I almost do as well as her! I’m on 45k and rent and really struggle, I find it offensive that at her age it isn’t obvious to everyone that she’s doing very well for herself? Our situations surely aren’t comparable?

Depends on the opportunities she has had in life really

DinaofCloud9 · 12/04/2025 21:10

Who cares though? It's not a competition.

JHound · 12/04/2025 21:11

I think she’s doing pretty ok.

Ph3 · 12/04/2025 21:12

@Upkkk I would consider doing well as it’s above average but not very well. But remember that it’s not all about money.

Oldmothershrubboard · 12/04/2025 21:12

Do you mean in terms of money or in terms of achievement?

SemperIdem · 12/04/2025 21:13

Yes she is.

Were your parents trying to be encouraging and supportive of you, in their response? I can see why it got on your nerves, don’t get me wrong.

BacktoBeginnersFran · 12/04/2025 21:14

You're both doing OK IMO

MidnightPatrol · 12/04/2025 21:14

What’s the maths on ‘after tax you do nearly as well as her’?

But yes, objectively, she’s doing well. It puts her in the top ~1-2% of female earners.

sunshinesunday · 12/04/2025 21:14

I don’t understand the previous posters, even if it’s below what you earn, rationally you can appreciate its significantly above average wage

FaceOrf · 12/04/2025 21:18

Of course she’s doing extremely well she’s in her 30s and close to owning a house outright and on a six figure salary (factoring in the bonus). She’s doing incredibly well! Not comparable to someone renting at all.

Jabberwok · 12/04/2025 21:26

Where I am from £45k is outstanding ! Your sister is doing well, but so are you. The last full year of my (admittedly micro) business was 2022 and between my wife and I we turned over less than that.

It's an old adage, money doesn't buy happiness. I worked for someone who's pensions totalled over £70k had a huge house, lavish holidays 3 times a year and was truly sad and unhappy.

Catsandcannedbeans · 12/04/2025 21:51

To me, my kids all having their own room and getting a holiday (in the UK two times a year and abroad once every two years) is doing well. You and your sis are killing it. X
