Small bags now I'm bigger and older

I am 5"10, gained a bit of weight over the years so size 18, and love little swing bags and small cross body bags.
Just big enough for the essentials and possibly a small water bottle.

I also have a bad shoulder so the lighter the better.

I'll carry a canvas tote or even a rucksack if I need more space.

My dsis is very blunt and shorter and slimmer than me reckons i should have a bigger shoulder bag, messenger bag or bigger cross body bag to balance me out.

She says I can't get away with small bags any more now I'm middle aged and bigger.

So now I'm worried I look ridiculous and I honestly can't tell when I look in the mirror!

Try a bigger one and see if it does look better?
Or, if you don't care, carry on wearing the bags you love and tell her to wind her neck in?

Allmarbleslost · 12/04/2025 15:58

Tell your dsis to get to fuck and wear whatever bag you like. Please don't dwell on unkind comments.

Your DSIS is mental.

I’ve never looked at a woman and thought ‘she needs a bigger handbag to balance her body’

outerspacepotato · 12/04/2025 16:03

Carry whatever you want.

I like a very small bag for phone, lip balm, and keys or just carry my phone in a pocket. I had to carry a big work tote for years and I enjoy going around light now.

Sod that, a bag is a bag, your dsis is batshit

Thank you! I'm going to get paranoid, she already says I stand out for being so tall.

Her daughter started a fashion degree last September and I'm wondering if she's feeling a bit insecure herself and I'm embarrassing her.

you're not on some fashion runway every day!

I'm short and dumpy, and I'll bloody well carry whatever bag suits my purposes for the day thankyou very much (although I do have a lovely red leather full round handbag that I've never used, because the situation never seems fancy enough.. I'll have to remedy that)

Why on earth carry more than you need to. Swing over the little uniqlo half-moon bag thing and go with it.

edit: Enjoy being tall! It's fantastic, dominate the space and take pride in that. Never shrink yourself.

My cousin is about your height/size and she fills the room with her uncompromising personality (in a good way) and bright red lipstick. Don't ever let anyone shame you for taking up space - you are what you are, and that's great.

Yellowpingu · 12/04/2025 17:30

You do you and embrace it! I find the bigger the bag I carry the more crap I fill it with creating unnecessary weight. My bag is big enough to hold my phone, prescription sunglasses, car key, small coin purse and a couple of dog poo bags. I have no need to weigh myself down with anything else. I’m short and fat, btw!

RunLikeTheWild · 12/04/2025 22:52

@UpsideDownChairs thank you so much, your edit made me tear up, it means a lot you took the time to say that.
I have always struggled with my height, it's about time I start owning it and feeling comfortable.

She’s being ridiculous. Carrying overly heavy bags is bad for you anyway. Just ignore her.
