As a public service announcement.

Get them if you're of an age, and encourage any older parents or relatives to get them.

Not only do they protect against the nightmare of shingles, but there is now good evidence they have a protective effect against dementia.

The recombinant shingles vaccine is associated with lower risk of dementia - Nature Medicine

A natural experiment including more than 200,000 people who received a shingles vaccine reveals that, within 6 years of vaccination, the recombinant vaccine is associated with lower risk of dementia than is the live vaccine.

I half wondered if the models were overfitted, tbh. The sample size isn't truly large & the outcome isn't so common & the covariates are quite large in number and have been aggregated in complicated ways. I can't be asked to look closely. The strongest argument for getting shingles jab is that shingles is pretty unpleasant.

The survival analysis got to mean (I think mean not median?) 174 days mean difference in dementia onset. That's 6months which is cool and often precious to the persons affected, but note that it's not a huge delay to everyone.

Sorry for resurrecting this post! I came looking to see if anyone had a bad reaction to this vaccine and can see that a lot of people have! I’ve just had my vaccine and I’m 66.
I rang my surgery when I was 65 and asked for it to be told I’d missed the boat and the next time I could have it was 70.
However I went for a mot at the drs where the nurse took all my bloods and noticed on my records that I should be offered the shingles and pneumonia vaccines.
Now I’ve seen the dr a lot in the last few months and no mention of this but the nurse spotted it.
Maybe it’s worth those of you who missed the 64/65 cut off to check with your dr not receptionist to see if they’re offering it now.
