Away with extended family and my god they just want to be in control of everything. Making themselves centre of attention by being the loudest / funniest / most entertaining and it’s exhausting. To the point where it’s making me want to retreat and therefore appear boring and insular of which I am absolutely not. Any ideas on coping?

No ideas sorry, other than be firm that you won’t do it again.

I turned down a free holiday to a place I’d been before but was desperate to go to again because I absolutely knew it would end up like that. No regrets.

Is there another kindred spirit in the group or are they all the same? If no one that you can start a side conversation with I’d fake illness (migraines or IBS are my go-to) and retreat to your room to read / doom scroll / secretly drink wine.
