Those awful fire safety and road safety adverts when I was growing up in the early 2000s? I used to have awful nightmares from them and am fairly sure they must have gotten complaints from others as well, because they haven’t been on the TV for years! Yes they told a tough love message but they were just too much.🙁

One of my favourites is one about the dangers of putting a rug down on a newly polished floor. "You may as well set a man trap!".

One of my friends sent me one about the perils of having a cup of tea when on a boat in choppy waters.

Pandimoanymum · 10/04/2025 23:19

“You may as well set a man trap!” 🤣
I remember that!

SaladSandwichesForTea · 10/04/2025 23:20

Ah, I thought this was going to be a cheerful nostalgia threads 😪

I was all set to ask of anyone remembers the name of those diet culture snacks aimed at women (advertosed as handbg sized) that said things "so little the calories have fallen out!" I think they were in little silver packets and called something like Little Moments.

WeylandYutani · 10/04/2025 23:21

I remember him coming to our school , he was a hell of a difference to Tufty :)

Public information films I think??

Back in the 70's there was ALWAYS a fire to watch being put out on a Saturday morning - chip pans, cigarettes and flammable furniture

That's Life did a lot for safety in the UK, making it law that children's night clothes were non flammable ( I saw my sisters nightie catching fire ), kettle cords were short, plugs were attached , furniture had a non flammable layer - and so much safety we take for granted now

YouRemindMe0fTheBabe · 10/04/2025 23:29

It was the one about electric blankets that got me. A couple getting ready for bed after a romantic meal and then the voiceover saying "On George and Betty's night of romance, things got a bit too hot..." Cut to an image of a blackened burned bed. Horrific!

I've never owned an electric blanket... 😂

ThatsNotMyTeen · 10/04/2025 23:31

TeenLifeMum · 10/04/2025 23:10

There was the car one where the driver died when then back seat passenger wasn’t strapped in and the front passenger was a teenage girl screaming - she was a friend at uni.

That was a hard hitting one wasn’t it.

The AIDS one with the headstone was fucking terrifying

Eyes98 · 10/04/2025 23:36

The ones about unlicensed mini cabs - lord god almighty😶😶😶

ExtraOnions · 10/04/2025 23:50

Clunk Click … Jimmy Savile
Kids & Water .. Rolf Harris

Who knew the biggest danger in those adverts, were the people warning us.

Those public information films still haunt me “a rug on a polished floor is like a mantrap” and “kid retrieving frisbee from Electricity sub-station”

That car one worked for me, I had been a bit careless about seatbelts in the back before then as I’d assumed I was only risking myself!

I know a few people that refuse to ever own an electric blanket because of those ads.

HuffleMyPuffle · 11/04/2025 00:01

"If you hit me at 30 ..."

There was also one with a train or pylons. I remember kids playing and then whichever situation and then the police turning up at the kid's house to tell his parents

Not just safety, there was an anti-piracy one that used to terrify me - not the "you wouldn't steal a car" one, it had a blacksmith/the devil slamming a brand into the screen. Always had to stop before it came on.

CosyRoby · 11/04/2025 00:05

Yeah the tombstone aids one always stuck with me too.
Also like previous posters , have lifelong aversions to ponds , pylons and reservoirs due to the public information ads.

The cartoons with Charlie?

Those were the 70’s

I was just remembering one for the Parker Lady pen, some girls at finishing school and the teacher saying “now the most important lesson of all, how to spend Daddy’s lovely money!”,writes cheque with Parker Lady “noughts just seem to roll from its tip!”

Maitri108 · 11/04/2025 00:32

Horrific. I remember the sparkler one, the drowned child, the pylon, fireworks...

ghostyslovesheets · 10/04/2025 23:08

2000’s blimey you would have hated the 70’s I have a fear of hammers, peaches, kites and pylons as a result!

The hammer and the peach! I’d forgotten that but wincing remembering it now. That’s going to keep me awake tonight.

I always remember those terrifying AIDS ads in the 80’s put the fear of God in people

Same here,I was convinced had aids after being a student in Brighton. I cared for so many guys diagnosed in the mid eighties..terrifying !

DefinitelyMaybe92 · 11/04/2025 00:42

Wasn’t there an ant who played with matches? 🤔

Pandimoanymum · 10/04/2025 23:17

Aids: Don’t Die of Ignorance. Chiselled on a gravestone.
Between that and the Protect and Survive nuclear war adverts, I’m amazed I got through my teen years without thinking death was imminent.

Had the opposite effect on me. I thought if we were all about to die in a fireball, might as well just get on and have a good time. TBH I think I was more worried about getting pregnant as a teen.

ThinWomansBrain · 11/04/2025 00:52

I remember Tufty being ditched in favour of the Green Cross Code Man
that was traumatic.

everythingeverything1981 · 11/04/2025 01:00

I remember the 999 episodes with Michael Buerk, I made a fire plan for my house lol
